Stacking the Shelves (55)

"Stacking the Shelves" is a weekly theme hosted by Tynga's reviews . Feel free to join in if you want. In this theme I showcase all the books I got this week.

It was a good week. I only bought three books this week, which is now my new buying ban theme. Than I went to the thrift store by me and got Rot and Ruin for only 2 dollars. And of course I had to go to the library and I think I got some good books there.

Rot and Ruin by Johnathan Maberry
I've been on the fence on whether or not to buy it, because I don't really like zombie books. But when I saw it for just two dollars and in faily good condition (except someone wrote on the book, which you don't do!). So, I had to get it.

The Crown of Embers by Rae Carson
I've been searching for this since I read The Girl of Fire and Thorns and I couldn't eve find it, not in any format. And I was so glad when I finally found it!! And it was just released in paperback, so it matches my copy of TGFT.

Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas
I got it!!!!!! I can't wait to read it!!!!

The Way of The Shadows by Brent Weeks
If you noticed I've been getting this book a lot from the library. It's not because I keep rereading it over and over, but because I haven't been reading it. I keep getting it from the library and I put it somewhere and not pick it up until I have to bring it back. So, I keep checking it out in hopes that I will finally read it, because it looks like a really great book!

The Raven Queen by Jules Watson
I know nothing about this book besides that it looks good.

The Sin Eater's Confession by Isla J. Bick
Ditto to the Raven Queen.

That's what I got this week, what did you get?

Review: Unravel Me by Tahereh Mafi

Grade4.5 Butterflies
Series: The Shatter Me Series, #1 Shatter Me (Review), #1.5 Destroy Me, #2 Unravel Me, #3 Ignite Me.
Author: Tahereh Mafi
Publisher: HarperCollins
Pages: Hardcover, 461

Goodreads Summary

it's almost
time for war.

Juliette has escaped to Omega Point. It is a place for people like her—people with gifts—and it is also the headquarters of the rebel resistance.

She's finally free from The Reestablishment, free from their plan to use her as a weapon, and free to love Adam. But Juliette will never be free from her lethal touch.

Or from Warner, who wants Juliette more than she ever thought possible.

In this exhilarating sequel to Shatter Me, Juliette has to make life-changing decisions between what she wants and what she thinks is right. Decisions that might involve choosing between her heart—and Adam's life.

I read and loved the first book in this series, Shatter Me, a while back. I loved everything about it, the writing, the characters, the world, the plot, anything and everything. However, It took me awhile to get to this book, not because I wasn't excited for it, but because I was terrified that this book wasn't going to be as good as Shatter Me. I've read so many series where I've loved the first book, but then the series just goes down hill. Thankfully, I finally got up the nerve to read this and Loved it!! Everything I loved in the previous books I love in this book. This was such a outstanding sequel!! It did have a bit of the middle book syndrome, but not enough to overshadow the good things about it.

Let me first tell you why this book had a little bit of middle book syndrome. I felt like the plot mostly resolves around Juliette deciding who she is and being a scared and hating herself and than having mini panic attacks (or not so mini). And the most common thing that you will see in reviews about this book is that a lot of people didn't like how Juliette acted. A lot of readers didn't like how she thought of herself and let her doubt define her. And I did get a little annoyed with it, especially all the mini panic attacks in the beginning.

However, while this plot closely resolves around that, it doesn't fully. The plot is still moving forward, the war is happening, people are dying and that really made the book for me. If that all wasn't happening, if the author made the war happen after Juliette went through her stage I think I would have hated this book. Because the author made the perfect balance of emotional struggle and action-war-stuff. And that really put more depth in it, because while all Juliette wants to do is sit and cry, there is a war to fight and this forces her to fight. I felt like this really made the book more real, because in real life you just can't sit and wallow in you self loathing and doubts, you need to find the strength to get up and fight.

Tahereh Mafi walked a line in this book that few would, because if she wrote a little bit more of the emotional struggle I would have been bored, but if she wrote more action I would have felt like Juliette's doubts and fear where more of an after thought. Tahereh Mafi blew me away with her outstanding and writing again! She is such a brilliant writer!

Like I said, the war between Omega Point and the Reestablishment really gets going in this book. There is some major fights in this one and those where so awesome to read!! Another thing that I really liked about the war, besides all the action, was how it helped us to see more of this world. Not much more I admit, but you get to see it again, you learn about the system it has, and you learn some of it's history. And I really loved that! Of course there is many twists and turns that you really don't see coming. The one about Adams family didn't shock me as much, because I was hopping something like that would happen, but the one about Warner was really great!

You also get to learn more about the characters in this one. Not just the main characters, but also the side characters as well. We get to see some of Juliette's past, just little words here and there about it, but it still gives her a lot more depth. And of course we get to see her character development through out the book. And we get to learn a little about Kenji, about his powers, his past and some of the pain he is carrying. And he is one of my favorite characters now!! I love his attitude on life, how he is silly but how he never forgets that there is work to be done. I just loved him!!

We also get to learn more about many others, including Castle. And of course we get to learn more about Warner. I love Warner and I loved how we got to see more of him and his past and how we got to read Juliette learning all that and connecting with him. But I feel if he doesn't let Juliette help him, he will become one of those characters that is tragic and brings pain with him, because I know Juliette won't stay with him if he keeps acting like he's been.

The only one that seemed to skipped the more depth department was Adam. I really didn't like how he wasn't present for most of the book. I didn't like how he didn't try harder to make it work between him and Juliette. I know he is trying to get ride of what made the rift between them, but I it still annoyed me. But at the same time I'm glad what happened between them did. I felt like it allowed Juliette to grow more and help her realized she doesn't need a man to lean on. I loved that!

Overall I loved this book! The writing and the plot are just outstanding!! And while I did get annoyed with Juliette and how she was afraid to fight, I loved her character development throughout the book. And I just can't wait for Ignite Me to release!!

This book got....

Review: Before Midnight by Cameron Dokey

 GradeButterflies
Name: Before Midnight, a Once Upon Time novel.
Author: Cameron Dokey
Publisher: Simon Pulse
Pages: Paperback, 193

Goodreads summary

tienne de Brabant is brokenhearted. His wife has died in childbirth, leaving him alone with an infant daughter he cannot bear to name. But before he abandons her for king and court, he brings a second child to be raised alongside her, a boy whose identity he does not reveal.
The girl, La Cendrillon, and the boy, Raoul, pass sixteen years in the servants' care until one day a very fine lady arrives with her two daughters. The lady has married La Cendrillon's father, and her arrival changes their lives.
When an invitation to a great ball reaches the family, La Cendrillon's new stepmother will make a decision with far-reaching effects. Her choice will lead La Cendrillon and Raoul toward their destiny -- a choice that will challenge their understanding of family, test their loyalty and courage, and, ultimately, teach them who they are.

I read Cameron Dokey's Wild Orchid and didn't really like it much at all. However, I went into this book with an open mind hopping that it was just the book Wild Orchid I didn't like, not the series. And in the beginning of this book I thought that it was, but as the story went on I learned that Wild Orchid wasn't the black sheep in this series. Because if you asked me what I thought of this book I would say it was just to silly for me and I didn't like it.

Like I said this plot started out really good. The author put her own spin on the story tell Cinderella, but at the same time kept the aspects that makes the fairy-tale. And at first I was enjoying reading it, even though it was a little predictable, and the book flowed very well. However, the farther the plot went on the more forced and flat it felt. Like at the end I was just like, "why the heck did that happen again?". For example in the way end when her "True Love" put the glass slipper on her I felt like the author put that in there not because it fit the plot, but because the fairy-tale demanded it. The guy was just like "I have your shoe, and I really want to put it on your foot, so um....yah".

The other thing I didn't like about the plot was how I did get a little bored with it in the middle. It was going good, but then the plot really hit a road block. The plot picks up after a while, but I got so bored at one part I had to force myself to pick it back up again.

That's another thing I didn't like about this book was how everybody seemed to get a true love and a happy ever after. Which wouldn't have been so bad if most of these romances weren't based on Love at first sight. That just annoyed me to no end. That now leads me to a point I want to make and that is I feel like this book would make a good pre-teen book. I just think younger people would like the love at first sight and the weird symbolism better, then older teens.

"The Dead tree gave a groan, with a great crack, the blackened bark split open. A great trembling seized the tree's every limb, and then the bark peeled back like the skin of an onion. Revealing strong new bark beneath, glimmering pale and fresh."

That is an example of the weird symbolism that I was talking about. And I only call it symbolism because I don't know what else to call it. And passages like that are all over this book, which is why I think younger people would like this book better than older people. And it is also the reason I called the book silly. I just couldn't take this plot seriously, even with all the great points it was making, because of how they are told like that passage up there. And there really was great massages in this book, massages about death, grief, anger, finding who you are, growing up, and mourning. But I couldn't keep a straight pace because of how the symbolism plays out.

Overall, I didn't like this book, even though there was one or two enjoyable aspects in it. I just felt like it wasn't my kind of book as it was just a little to silly for me, even for a "feel good" book. But if you are younger or you like those kind of books, I think you would like this a lot more than I did.

This book got...

2 Butterflies
Boring, not really my kind of book.

Discussion Time: Bookish Pet Peeves,

Hello guys, it's been a while since I did a discussion post, which is sad because I really like discussion thing with you guys. Anyway, today I want to know your pet peeves in books and I have a few a these, but since I don't want this to be a long post I will just tell you my top three.

The first is when the summary tells you half of the freakin book! I just hate it when your reading a book and it's good, but half way through you are still on what the summary tells you up front. I hate this for the simple reason that it makes the book boring. I love books where I can't tell whats going to happen next and where I'm shocked by all the twist and turns. And when the summary reveals all the important stuff for the first half, it just throws that concept out the window. Although, when this happens in books the last half is usually pretty good.

The second one is Inst-Love. I don't know why author's keep insisting on writing Insta-Love, they have to know that most readers hate it. Out of all the books I've read that have insta-love in it there is only a few that I didn't hate and only one that I love (the awesomeness that is Robin LeFevers people). I think it's simple why I hate this so much, it's just so unrealistic, it's something that won't ever happen in life. I hate it even more when the main plot in the book is a love story. It's like the plot is freakin based on these characters love, why the heck wouldn't you take your time with it author?

I think the only times I haven't hated insta-love is if the characters have a spell on them, if they are soul-mates (this is something that a lot of authors get wrong though), and if it's a cheesy love stories (which is my guilty pleasure) That's it.

The last one is something that doesn't annoys me as much as it saddens me. This is when in a fantasy book or any book that isn't set in our world with our society and the author doesn't describe the world. I just read a book where this happen and I was so disappointed with it, because for me half the fun is seeing the world that the author made up from his/her mind. And it disappoints me and annoys when the author doesn't take the time to describe the world, besides just a few passing explanations here and there. This not only annoys me, but I feel like it handicaps the plot, which sucks even more.

And I realize that for some writers describing physical appearances isn't their strongest ability *cough*, Me *cough*, but most writers like that still try. Which you have to apprecate. However, some don't even try and you can tell when some writers didn't even try to describe their world, they just explained the society (some don't even do that) and than say the heck with it. This just annoys me so much.

Those are my bookish pet peeves. Tell me in the comments what your's are, if you agree are disagree with what I said.  Comment anything.

Top Ten Tuesday (31)

This meme is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish

Top Ten Most Memorable Secondary Characters (originally done May 2011)

I tried my best to not include love interests, which was a little hard to do. So, I only came up with 8 secondary characters that are really memorable to me.

1. Kanin in Unravel Me by Tahereh Mafi
Kanin is such an amazing character!! There wasn't much said about his past and the pain he himself most be feeling. But I admire how he keeps a smile on his face, but is professional when he needs to be. I just love him!!

2. Belan from Touch of Power by Maria V. Snyder
I love Belan so much!! I love how he is Poppa bear in the group and his whole personality is the best!!

3. Minnie from Ten by Gretchen McNeil
Minnie is one of the most memorable not because she was a great friend, but because she is such a freaking selfish brat. I don't understand how someone can be friends with her. I wanted to slap her so many times through out this book.

4. Janco & Ari from the Study series by Maria V. Snyder
The power twins!!!! They're just freaking awesome!! And I just love their relationship, usually in most books you see two girl best friends not two guy best friends.

5. Emma from the Soul Screamers series by Rachel Vincent
Emma is a great character and such a great friend!! If I could have a best friend from a book it would be Emma. She is understanding and stands by her friends even when it's dangerous. She is just amazing!!

6. Grimalkin from the Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa
You can't read the Iron Fey series without being curious about this cat. He is their guide for the whole series and you just have to wonder about him, his past, his life, his family and if he has any. He is just an interesting character.

7. River from the Immortal Beloved series by Cate Teirnan
River is someone you have to marvel at. Shes probably been through hell and back, many times, and yet she's still a great understanding person.

8. Princess Nehemia from Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas
Princess Nehemia isn't shown much in this book, but I can tell she's going to be a big part of the rest of the books.

That's my list, whats yours?

Ten by Gretchen McNeil

Grade Butterflies
Name: Ten
Author: Gretchen McNeil
Publisher: Balzer & Bray
Pages: Paperback, 320 pages

SHHHH!
Don't spread the word!
Three-day weekend. Party at White Rock House on Henry Island.
You do NOT want to miss it.

It was supposed to be the weekend of their lives—an exclusive house party on Henry Island. Best friends Meg and Minnie each have their reasons for being there (which involve T.J., the school’s most eligible bachelor) and look forward to three glorious days of boys, booze and fun-filled luxury.

But what they expect is definitely not what they get, and what starts out as fun turns dark and twisted after the discovery of a DVD with a sinister message: Vengeance is mine.

Suddenly people are dying, and with a storm raging, the teens are cut off from the outside world. No electricity, no phones, no internet, and a ferry that isn’t scheduled to return for two days. As the deaths become more violent and the teens turn on each other, can Meg find the killer before more people die? Or is the killer closer to her than she could ever imagine?

I won this book a few weeks back and was really excited to get to it, because I've heard a lot of good things about it. And after reading it for the Bout of Books read-a-thon I can say that they all are true. This book was such a great read!!! It was really fun to read and it was incredibly creepy.

The plot starts with our main character Meg and her best friend Minnie docking on Henry Island where a three day party is happening. And right when they set foot on the island you get this really sinister vibe from it. That vibe never goes away, which I really love, because that really helps it stay creepy through out the whole book, even when it isn't a creepy scene. And to warn you, this book is freaky. It scared the crap out of me so many times. I could barely sleep because of it! It also didn't help that I read most of this in the middle of the night and I was the only one awake.

The plot starts out right away and never stops. There are so many twists and turns and the mystery instantly grabs your attention. This is one of the few times in a mystery where I couldn't guess who the killer was. I kept going around and around with suspects and I kept thinking that I knew who it was and then they died. It's like "nope it wasn't that one then". This plot was just so good! And so fast-paced. I just devoured this book! And you will be shocked when you read who it was.

What was the best thing in this book was how creepy and captivating it was. This author weaved this sinister tone into this book with such talent that even when a scene wasn't suppose to be creepy terrifies you. And it's such a subtle creepy. At first you aren't scared at all, so you have this false sense of security. But than slowly but surely it starts to get creepier and creepier. And before you know it you are terrified to read the next page, but you are so caught up in the plot that you have to turn the page. You have to see who dies next, whose not where their suppose to be, will somebody pop out of the closet and try and kill them. You just have to know.

Why, you are asking, why are you giving it four Butterflies if you are singing it's praise. Well, I'm giving it four Butterflies even though I really enjoyed reading is because it didn't blow me away. It isn't the book that will pop in my head months from now. The story won't stay with me. I'm not saying it isn't good, it really is, you will enjoy reading it, but it's just wasn't the best book I ever read.

Overall I thought this was a really great story that I enjoyed reading very much and I would recommend it to everybody. If you want a scary book, read this one. If you want a quick read, read this one. If you want a mystery that you won't be able to solve, read this one. Just put this one on your TBR pail, because it's a book that won't disappoint you and even if it doesn't blow you away, like it didn't me, it will still leave you satisfied and glad you read it.

This book got...

 4 Butterflies
Beloved, This is a really enjoyable book.
Reccomended if you like: Horror books, Mysteries, and fast paced books.

Stacking the Shelves (54)

"Stacking the Shelves" is a weekly theme hosted by Tynga's reviews . Feel free to join in if you want. In this theme I showcase all the books I got this week.

I offically broke my book buying ban. All the books before it I could have fit into it, but no matter how hard I try I can't fit Gated into the ban rules. But oh well, I'm still really excited for this stack of books!

Gated by Amy Christine Parker
I've heard some really good things about this book. So, I just had to get it. And I'm really excited to get to this one!!

Mr. Darcy's Dairy by Amanda Grange
This was in Barnes & Noble's Bargain Books spot and it's a book about Darcy's POV, how can anyone pass that up? And plus it was just 2$s. I was jumping up and down when I saw this book.

The Edge of Never by J. A. Redmerski
I ordered this from the library ages ago, and it took so long because so many other people ordered it before me. This is another book I'm just so excited to read!!

That's all I got, what did you get this week?

I know that Fullmetal Alchemist wasn't on my TBR, but I remembered yesterday that I checked it out from the library and it was due soon. So, I thought why not read it before I need to bring it back.
And last night I started the Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa. I'm only 50 pages in, but it's really good so far.

Today's challenges are:
Book Road Trip @ In Wonderland
I Spy... @ Paperback Dreamer

For the book road trip you come up with a list with 5-10 states/places you always wanted to visit. And than you find a book (doesn't matter if you read it) that takes place there, or an author that lives there.
This was hard for me, because I don't remember where a book is set.
My List:

1. England:
Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen
2. New York:
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerld
3. North Carolina:
The Last Song by Nicolas Sparks
4. Paris, France:
Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins.
5. San Francisco, California:
Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins
6. Maine:
Dead Beautiful by Yvonne Woon
7. New Orleans, Louisiana:
Out of The Easy by Ruta Sepetys.
8. Ireland:
Gold by Talia Vance

For the I spy challenge you are suppose to find the items below on the covers of your books. So, if it says fire you are suppose to find a book you own with fire on the cover. There are some more rules so go to the Paperback Dreamer to see all the rules.
The Items and my answers.

Snowflakes: Dead to You by Lisa McMann
Flames: Demon Glass by Rachel Hawkins
A city Skyline: The Ward by Jordana Frankel
The Moon: Nights in Rodanthe by Nicholas Sparks

A Sword: Soulbound by Heather Brewer
A Wedding Dress: Eternal Vows by Chrissy Peebles

Lighting: Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout
A Tattoo: Deity by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Combat Boots: Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen

There is a lot of stuff to find, and the tricky part is you can only choose the covers from what you own. But it was still really fun to do! And if you can't see the item on the cover, just click on the image and it will enlarge.

Challenges Finished: Re-Title It @ Music Plus Books.
Overall Pages Read: 505
Overall Books Read: Ten by Gretchen McNeil & Before Midnight by Cameron Dokey.
Overall Challenges Finished: The Bookish Bucket List, ReTitle It.

I didn't finish Ten on Monday, I still had about 50 Pages left in that one. So, I finished the rest of that one on Tuesday morning and than in the afternoon I started Before Midnight. And I didn't think I would be able to finish that one, but I surprised myself.

And Today's Challenges are
the TBR List Challenge @ Musings of a Bookship Girl
Book Spine Poetry @ Such a Novel Idea
Of course you need to link all your answers at the hosts website to be entered in the contests.

For the TBR list challenge all you have to do is answer two questions. The questions are:

1.  Which 5 books are at the top of your TBR pile at this moment?

2.  If I gave you a wad of cash and sent you into a bookshop right now, which 5 books would you buy to add to the stack?

My answers are:

1. The top five books on my TBR are basically the ones I want to read for the read-a-thon.

Asunder by Jodi Meadows,
Through the Ever Night by Veronica Rossi,
Scarlet by Marissa Meyer,
Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell

And for the Book Spine Poetry all you have to do it make a poem from book spines.
My poem is:

Eons Gated
Everneath the Pirate's Wish
The Forsaken Crave
Rapture.

That's how i'm doing for the read-a-thon, how are you doing?

Bout of Books Update: Day 1

Monday:
Pages read: 238
Books finished: None.
Overall pages: 238
Overall Books: None:
Challenges Finished: I did the Bookish Bucket List @ Sarah Says Read.
Overall challenges: The Bookish Bucket List.

I was reading Ten by Gretchen McNeil yesterday and got most of the way through it before Midnight and than put it down, because I needed sleep. And this morning I read the rest of it, which was 56 pages. So, now my overall pages count is 294 and Overall books finished is Ten by Gretchen McNeil.

And today's challenge is the Re-Title It @ Music Plus Books. The rules are simple, just rename the book you are reading or just read.

I would re-name Ten by Gretchen MvNeil to The Island.
And I didn't re-do the cover, because I thought that it's kind of perfect.

That's it for my update, how is the Read-A-Thon going for you?
Happy reading
