Top Ten Tuesday (14)

Top Ten  Books I Recommend The Most

This one was really hard, because I don't have much people in my life that reads like me, (except for my mom and grandma, but they don't have the same taste in books as me). So, I just said the books that I recommend to fellow bloggers the most.

Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout.
This goes without saying, I love this series so much and whenever someone asks me what they should read next (which doesn't happen often) I always say this book.

Sweet Evil by Wendy Higgins.
Again, I love this book so much  and I tell everyone, from people I see everyday to bloggers, to read this book.

Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi.
I don't really recommend this book much anymore, because I think most people already read it. I just recommend it if I know the person hasn't read it yet.

Leaving Paradise by Jennifer Elkeles.
I recommend this book to the people who love contemporary or people who just want a contemporary read, because its one of the best contemporary book I have read.

Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder.
I love this book so much and I want everybody to read it and experience this book.

Immortal Beloved by Cate Tiernan.
I really like this book, because its a mix of contemporary and paranormal. Again I recommend it to everybody I can.

Touch of Frost by Jennifer Estep.
This is one of my favorite series, and (again) I recommend it to every person I can, because its so good.

The Last Song by Nicholas Sparks
I love all the books I have read from this author, but this one is my favorite by far. Although I wish he would write another book set two years after this one to see how there life is.

Spider's Bite by Jennifer Estep.
I recommend this book to my fellow assassin book lovers, because this is the first assassin book I ever read and its a really good one.

Fire by Kristian Cashore.
I know this one is the second book in the series, but it doesn't have much to do with the first one and its my favorite in the series. So, I recommend this book more then the first in the series, Graceling.

Thats my list, what was yours?
Happy reading.

Review: Wild Orchid by Cameron Dokey

GradeButterflies
Name: Wild Orchid (Once Upon A Time)
Author: Cameron Dokey
Source: My Bookshelves
Publisher: Simon Pulse
PagesPaperback224 pages

Goodreads summary

Wielding a sword as deftly as an embroidery needle, Mulan is unlike any other girl in China. When the emperor summons a great army, each family must send a male to fight. Tomboyish Mulan is determined to spare her aging father and bring her family honor, so she disguises herself and answers the call.

But Mulan never expects to find a friend, let alone a soul mate, in the commander of her division, Prince Jian. For all of Mulan's courage with a bow and arrow, is she brave enough to share her true identity and feelings with Prince Jian?

For my Birthday I got the book Once, which has three of Cameron Dokey's books from the Once Upon a Time series in it. Wild Orchid was the one I most wanted to read, because I just love the fairy tale of Mulan. I really enjoyed reading it, but when I finished it, I looked back at it and it disappointed me in so many ways.

The thing that I noticed about Wild Orchid right off the bat was, unlike other re-tellings like Cinder or Splintered that are modern re-tellings that have the same elements as the fairy tales, but feel modern, Wild Orchid felt like a fairy tale. Cameron Dokey has the writing style that feels timeless and everything in this book just sounded like a fairy tale. I really loved that.

The characters in this book reminded me of every character in every fairy tale, which is both good and bad. Good, because they have all these traits that you admire and love. Bad, because it didn't make them feel personal, they just felt like a clone copies.

The thing about this book, that if I had known it I don't think I would have read this book, is that only in the last half of the book was Mulan at war. The first 11 chapters was her back-story. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't bored when I was reading that part, but it was a little weird. Weird, because it wasn't always in chronological order. It was like Mulan was telling you about her childhood and she would tell you stories from different times in her childhood. And it wasn't until chapter 8 or 9 that it got a solid foundation for a  plot.

In chapter 11 is where the story of Mulan really starts and its almost exactly like the Disney story, except a lot faster. I would have loved this book so much more if her going to war didn't conceits of just one battle. That was it, she wasn't even in the army for more then two weeks. I would have loved it if the author slowed that part down and showed as what living in the army camp was like, or Mulan training  or what it would be like if there was more then one battle, something more. It just felt forced and fast.

Overall, I enjoyed reading this book, it was fun and had this way about it that made it feel like a fairy tale. However,  the part where Mulan goes to war felt rushed and just disappointed me on so many levels. I would recommend this to people who want a quick read, but just don't expect anything else or you'll end up disappointed like me.

This book got..

3 Butterflies
Basic, nothing special.

Reccomened if you like: Short stories, Re-tellings, and a great writing style.

Thats my review.

Cover Reveal: Tragic by J. A. Huss

Today I come to you with a cover reveal!! The cover is from the book Tragic by J. A. Huss. I really like all the books I have read by this author and Tragic doesn't look like an exception. And I am really excited for it to release, because it looks really good.
Anyway, on the the cover reveal.

****

**
***
****

To be honest I don't really love this cover, I like the lips and the cherry, but I don't think I like the color scheme. And I wish that, since the summary sounds a little haunted that the cover would to. I guess what I'm trying to say is I think its really pretty, but I wish that comparing it to the summary it would have matched the book a little bit more. Maybe when I read the book I think it will match the book better, who knows.

Tragic by J.A. Huss
Publication date:  May 20th 2013
Genre: New Adult Contemporary Romance

Goodreads: LINK

Synopsis:
Rook Walsh is TRAGIC

Because life so far – just sucks.  Some girls get parents.  Rook got the foster care system.  Some girls get Prince Charming.  Rook got an abusive frog.  Some girls get lucky…

Rook got a second chance.

And she took it.  Because when fate throws you a bone – you grab it with both hands and run.

Antoine Chaput knows the minute he spies Rook in his photography studio that she’s got The Look.  The dark and desperate look he must have to land the exclusive TRAGIC media contract.

Rook is paired up with top model, Ronin, and he’s everything her abusive ex-boyfriend wasn’t. Patient, gentle, happy, attentive, and sexy!  He knows exactly what to do to make Rook blush for Antoine’s portfolio.

Rook’s luck changes in an instant and suddenly she’s the darling of the modeling world.  It’s a dream job to go with a dream guy and all she has to do is look pretty and follow directions. But there’s always a price to pay – and Rook is about to get the bill.

TRAGIC is a new adult contemporary romance.

Now here is the reveal for the book trailer.

I really like this trailer. I like how they put the whole picture premise in it. And I am starting to think the cherry has some kind of meaning in the books, since its in the cover and the trailer.

AUTHOR BIO
J. A. Huss likes to write new adult books that make you think and keep you guessing. Her favorite genre to read is space opera, but since practically no one reads those books, she writes new adult science fiction, paranormal romance, contemporary romance, urban fantasy, and books about Junco (who refuses to be saddled with a label).

She has an undergraduate degree in horses, (yes, really–Thank you, Colorado State University) and a master’s degree in forensic toxicology from the University of Florida. She used to have a job driving around Colorado doing pretty much nothing but shooting the breeze with farmers, but now she just writes, runs the New Adult Addiction and Clean Teen Reads Book Blogs, and runs an online science classroom for homeschoolers.

Mini Review: Fullmetal Alchemist Volume 3 by Hiromu Arakawa

Volume 3

Goodreads Summary

Accompanied by their bodyguard, Alex Louis Armstrong, our heroes seek out their closest childhood friend, mechanic Winry Rockbell, to fix their battered "auto-mail" bodyparts. Soon their quest for the Philosopher's Stone takes them to the great central library, where the Stone's formula may be hidden...if the mysterious figure named Lust doesn't get there first! But the secret of the Philosopher's Stone may be even more frightening than the beings who guard it..

So, the last volume ended on a slight cliffhanger and this one doesn't really acknowledge it until the middle of it. Which is fine with me, because in the beginning it introduces some more characters. the new characters are from the Elric brother's past, so we also get a better look on there past and how they got to where they are today.

The plot in this book is really good. In the beginning not much is happening, but I was okay with that,  because like I said it tells you some information on their past. In about half way though, when they get to central is when the plot really picks up and some questions are answered, but that only leads to more questions. The volumes ends on a huge cliffhanger that makes me want to read the next one.

The illustrations in this are really good in my opinion, there not really detailed, but that's usually a given with Manga. I just really like the manga style illustrations.

This was another really great installment in a series that I have fallen in love with and I can't wait to read more in the series.

This got...

4.5 Butterflies
Beautiful, this is a great book.

That was my mini review, I hope you read this series if you are looking for a good manga.
Happy reading.

Stacking the Shelves (34)

"Stacking the Shelves" is a weekly theme hosted by Tynga's reviews . Feel free to join in if you want. In this theme I showcase all the books I got this week.

For two weeks in a row I didn't break my book buying ban!! And don't know whether to be happy about that, or sad about it, because I love buying books. However, I did get some library books and some other books from the library for my research paper I have to write, but I won't show you those 'cause there boring.

Library

I got...

Fever by Lauren DeStefano.
I really like the first book in this series and have been wanting to read this one. So naturally  when I saw it at the library I got it.

The Queens Lady by Eve Edwards.
I don't know much about this book, never seen any reviews or anything about it, but it looks right up my alley. So, I got it.

The Next One the Fall by Hilary Davidson.
Again, I don't know much about it and now looking at it I guess its a sequel to another book. I didn't know this.

Sirens by Janet Fox.
I saw this on another blog in a book haul and the I really liked the summary and cover. So, I was really excited to see it on my library shelves!

That's all I got this week, what did you get?
Happy reading.

Q: What is your guilty pleasure as far as reading? Is it a genre, or is it a certain type of book? .

Well, I don't think I have any guilty pleasures reading wise. The closest thing I can think of being a guilty pleasure is bad boys. I book will instantly go up on my TBR list if I know there is a bad boy in it, I just can't read enough books that have bad boys in them. And some of my favorite books have bad boys in them, like Wendy Higgins Sweet Evil, and Jennifer L. Armentrout Lux series. And whenever there is a love triangle there is a pretty good chance I'll be on the bad boy team.

I also am addicted to assassin books, I just love a kick-butt character.

That's my answer, what was yours.Happy reading.

Review: Everbound by Brodi Ashton.

Grade4.5 Butterflies
Name: Everbound (Everneath #2)
Author: Brodi Ashton
Source: My Bookshelves
PublisherBalzer + Bray
Pages: Hardcover358 pages

Warning: Do not read any farther if you haven't read the first book Everneath. See my review of it HERE.

Goodreads Summary

Nikki Beckett could only watch as her boyfriend, Jack, sacrificed himself to save her, taking her place in the Tunnels of the Everneath for eternity — a debt that should’ve been hers. She’s living a borrowed life, and she doesn’t know what to do with the guilt. And every night Jack appears in her dreams, lost and confused and wasting away.

Desperate for answers, Nikki turns to Cole, the immortal bad boy who wants to make her his queen — and the one person least likely to help. But his heart has been touched by everything about Nikki, and he agrees to assist her in the only way he can: by taking her to the Everneath himself.

Nikki and Cole descend into the Everneath, only to discover that their journey will be more difficult than they’d anticipated — and more deadly. But Nikki vows to stop at nothing to save Jack — even if it means making an incredible sacrifice of her own.

After reading the first one Everneath and reading that cliffhanger I really wanted to read the sequel and I was lucky enough to win a signed copy of it. I read it as soon as I could and I loved it!! And this book did something that is really rare, it made me love this series, a squeal making me love the series instead of the first one happened only once before this. This book was so much better then the first, where I barely felt a connection with the characters and the plot was a little slow, this one was the exact opposite.

The plot for me didn't start until page 100, because for those first 100 pages it was just getting caught up with the summary. Nikki was trying to convince Cole to come with her into the everneath and it wasn't really exciting, because we knew what happens in that matter. However, Brodi Ashton wrote that part beautifully, because while it wasn't really exciting, it wasn't boring either and I had just so much respect for her when I noticed that. In fact, she wrote that part so good it wasn't until page 100 that I noticed that it was all the summary.

After we got caught up in with the plot on page 100 the plot just shot forward. There was so much action and mystery, suspense and twists and turns that I didn't see coming in a million years, especially that ending, but I won't go there yet. I also loved learning more about the everneath. Brodi Ashton did a wonderful job with the world building, she explained the everneath in such a good way, she didn't go into to much detail that it took a whole page to explain how this one thing looked, but she didn't say to little where you got confused, She wrote it perfectly.

The characters where so much better in this book, I felt so connected with Nikki, and Cole got a lot more depth to his character. However (I am going to try and say this part without spoiling anything), for most of the book I didn't really like Nikki, because I really loved this one character and he loved her, but I felt like she didn't deserve him. And then that ending happened and I wanted to kill him, like literally push him off a cliff and I started to really love Nikki again, because I got it wrong, he didn't deserve her.

This ending is what really made me love this book. At first I hated that Brodi Ashton did that, but now I love it, because it made the book more.... realistic and heart wrenching. And I really loved that, because I love books that put you on a roller coaster of emotions and make you fear for the characters. The ending also made me realized how emotionally invested I am in these characters. When that bombshell ('cause it wasn't a cliffhanger it was a bombshell) was revealed my heart stopped beating and I just sat there stunned for a full five minutes before I fully understand what happened.

All I really have left to say is read this series as soon as you can, because even if you don't like the first one this one will blow you away. This book is what made this series into me top five favorite series, because it was just so outstanding. Almost everything about it blew my mind, if the first 100 pages weren't spent catching up with the summary it would have gotten 5 Butterflies, it was so great!

This book got...

4.5 Butterflies
Beautiful, this is a great book.

Reccomened if you like: The Everneath series, Greek Mythology, and Love stories.

Thats my review, I hope you pick these books up, because they are great.

Top Ten Tuesday (13)

This meme is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish

Top Ten Books I HAD To Buy...But Are Still Sitting On My Shelf Unread

There are a lot of books that fall in this category on my book shelf. And believe it or not, but these books make up half my TBR shelf. A fact that I am proud of since I have been trying to read the books on my TBR shelf. These books are in no order.

1. Override by Heather Anastasiu.
Right after I finished reading Glitch I went out and bought this expecting to read it as soon as I could. As you can see that never happened.

2. Rapture by Lauren Kate.
A lot of people hat this series and I loved it up until the third book were I skipped about half of it, because it was really slow. Even though I didn't like the third one I still really like the series. So, when I saw this book at Wallmart I got it planning to read it that week, but it never happened.

3. Dearly Departed by Lia Habel.
I have heard nothing but praise for this book and I thought it would be a good book to introduce my into the zombie world. I even started reading this and it was great, but I wasn't in the mood for a zombie book so I put it down.

4. Uglies by Scott Westerfeld.
Again, I have heard nothing but praise for this one and I really like destopyion so I got it. I also tryed reading this, but again I wasn't in the mood for this kind of book.

5. A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray.
This book looked right up my alley and I love the cover of it so I got it when I saw that it released in paperback and I never read it.

6. The Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson.
I didn't hear much about this book when I got it, just one review saying it was good. When I saw it in the store and read the back it looked great and wonderful so I got it right away and I haven't read it yet.

7. Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi.
For the third time now, I have heard nothing but praise for this book and I got it when I come out in paperback planning to read it that night, but I never got around to it.

8. The Adoration of Jenna Fox by Mary E. Pearson.
I found this book while browsing Barnes & Noble and when I read the back I had to have it, because it looked awesome and the cover it beautiful. Anyway, I was distracted by another book and kind of forgot this one.

9. Such a Rush by Jennifer Echols.
It is not a secret that I love Jennfier Echols and when I found this book hiding behind another book I was so excited!! I bought it and never read it.

10. Once Every Never bt Lesley Livingston.
This book is by far the book that has been in my TBR shelf the longest, I have had it for about 3 years. I love this authors other series, the Wondrous Strange series and when I saw that she was coming out with another series I was super excited. So, I got it and never read it.

That's my top ten, whats yours?
Happy reading.

Review: Fledge by J. A. Huss

Grade: 4.5 Butterflies
Name: Fledge (I am Just Junco #2)
Author: J. A. Huss
Source: The Author (thanks!)
Publisher: Science Future Press
Pages: Paperback, 388 pages

Warning, do not read any farther if you have not read the first book Clutch, my review of it HERE.

Goodreads summary

Junco Coot can’t even remember her trip off Earth; she was too busy being morphed into her new avian body. But reality hits her hard when she wakes up to find her new life is not what she expected. Not even close.

Tier is on trial for treason, the avian president wants her dead, her new military team is hostile, her body is being taken over by an illicit AI, and her only friend is a ten-year old throwaway boy.

In most places the avian Fledge ritual would be nothing more than mass murder, but here in the capital city of Amelia, it’s called growing up. Junco has two choices: fight to the death to prove her worth, or get sent back to Earth in the hands of her enemies.

In a foreign culture and surrounded by people she can’t trust or count on, Junco must find a way to save herself and Tier without losing her immortal soul in the process.

Wow, um I don't really know where to start this review; I had a lot of thoughts when I finished this book. In summary I loved this book. It was so much better then the first, the plot was amazing, the writing was great, and the characters felt so much more real than in the first one. However, some of the minor problems in the first book also carried into this book.

The plot blew me away. It was so much better then the first book where there were only a few fight scenes in the whole book, but in this book there is a fight scene in almost every chapter. The plot captivates you from the first page until the very last word. It's just so good.

What I was most excited for was the alien world. I was excited to see how the author would create the world and their culture and everything. I was a little disappointed when I figured out that their world, along with parts of their culture, was highly influenced by Earth. However, while their world was influenced by Earth, their thought process and morals were not. Like Junco once said "what would have been considered mass murder on earth was considered growing up here". I was just so appalled and I was waiting for the main character to also be, but this is Junco we're talking about and she's complicated.

Complicated describes my feelings for Junco to a T. In the first book, I was really thrown off balance by Junco's I-Don't-care attitude and that also carried into this book. Half of me admires her strength and intelligence and her bravery, but the other part of me is disappointed with her. I was waiting throughout this whole book for her to say "Screw this, you people are awful, I'm not listening to you" but she never did. She followed her orders, even if they where to murder people in cold blood and then she would go off on this self-hatred rant instead of hating them. Right when she was redeeming herself to me she would go back to her original self. I still think she is a very well written character and I did connect with her, I just couldn't decide if I really liked her or not.

One of the best things in this book, besides the plot, was how the characters felt so much more real in this book. In the last book, I only felt connected to Junco, but in this book I felt a connection to every character, new or old, and yes it includes Junco. And every character was so well written.

In my review for the first book I said that some things weren't explained and this book also had some of those, but not as much as the first one. Also some of my questions from the first book where answered in this book, like what are the seven siblings suppose to do, and what is her SEAR knife thing. I was really glad about that.

Overall, This is the first time a sequel was better than the first book. This book had a plot that blew me away and I felt connected to every character and it was just so good!! I can't wait to read the next book. However, if you are looking for a book series that is light and fun then you won't like this as much, because it is a very serious book with lots of death and fighting and I really loved it! I would recommend it to every paranormal, assassin, action fan out there.

This book got...

4.5 Butterflies
Beautiful, this is a great book.

Recommended if you like: Science fiction, Assassin books, and the I Am Just Junco.

That's my review, I hope you pick these up, because their great.
Happy reading.

Mini Reviews: Fullmetal Alchemist Volume 1 & 2

These are going to be some very short reviews, because I have some thoughts just not a lot and I really want to review them. So, I am just going to write short reviews for them.
Also a little bit of background before I go into the reviews, I watched most of this series on netflix, because its also an anima. I really love it so I wanted to read the manga and hear we are. Anyway, because of that I might be a little biased on the character development and mystery part of it so I won't go into detail about my thoughts on them.

Volume one.

Goodreads summary

Alchemy: the mystical power to alter the natural world; something between magic, art and science. When two brothers, Edward and Alphonse Elric, dabbled in this power to grant their dearest wish, one of them lost an arm and a leg...and the other became nothing but a soul locked into a body of living steel. Now Edward is an agent of the government, a slave of the military-alchemical complex, using his unique powers to obey orders...even to kill. Except his powers aren't unique. The world has been ravaged by the abuse of alchemy. And in pursuit of the ultimate alchemical treasure, the Philosopher's Stone, their enemies are even more ruthless than they are.

This volume does a great job introducing the characters and the world to the readers. It introduces all the major characters Edward and Alphonse Elric who are brothers and our main characters. It also introduces Roy Mustang who has a big part of the plot later on (and who is awesome). The one thing that I loved was how your first impression of Edward was that he was an arrogant brat, but as the story progressed and you saw some of his past you learn that he isn't all arrogant, he is also wise. He has been though so much in his 15 years that he has a wisdom that most old people have, because he has that and he is just an teenager it comes off as arrogance. I really like how his character is so layered.

The plot was really fast paced for the first volume in the series, there is action in every turn and Edward being very cunning in a smell minor town. What really drove the plot was the group of people who were introduced and, even though not much is said about them, you know are the bad guys. When you read that part you want to read the rest to see if anything else is said about them

Over all, I would recommend this book to a person who is just starting Manga or to a person who's been reading manga for a while now. And if you read this you will find your next "book boyfriend" because Edward Elric is all kinds of awesome.

Volume two.

Goodreads summary

In an alchemical ritual gone wrong, Edward Elric lost his arm and his leg, and his brother Alphonse became nothing but a soul in a suit of armor. Equipped with mechanical "auto-mail" limbs, Edward becomes a state alchemist, seeking the one thing that can restore his brother and himself...the legendary Philosopher's Stone.

There are many types of alchemy in the world. Edward's commanding officer, "Flame Alchemist" Roy Mustang, can control fire. Shou Tucker, the "Sewing-Life Alchemist," specializes in the most difficult alchemy of all...biological transmutation, the ability to alter the tissue of living things. But no matter what their power, alchemists are still human. And when a mysterious killer begins stalking state alchemists, no one can escape his vengeance.

More characters are introduced in this one, some military people and some other alchemist's. Roy Mustang gets more depth in this one (This is where I really started loving Mustang). The intermediate villain is also introduced, who I think is an awesome villain. Anyway, the plot picks up right were it left off and while there is some serous thinking on Ed's part the plot is still filled with action and fight scenes and humor. You can't read 10 paged without laughing your head off, these characters are just so funny!

There is some heartbreak in this book, when I was both reading the scene and watching it I just couldn't help but cry its just so sad!

The group of bad people are also in this and again there is an air of mystery surrounding them, but the author only gives you breadcrumbs on who they are and what they are doing. All you really know is that they are evil.

Like I said before, I would recommend this series to everyone, its so good. I love the characters, the plot, the illustrations, everything about it. Just read this.

would also recommend that you buy the three in one volumes, because I can never decide if I like a manga on the first volume 'cause it's so small.
