Short Break

Hello guys, I am taking a short break for the next week. I have a lot on my plate right now, I'm sick, I'm very stressed, and a bunch of other things. They all have combined to take away my want to blog. For the past week I have no desire or motivation to write reviews, memes, or any other posts. So, for the next few days I am just going to take away the added stress and guilt of not blogging.

I'm not leaving for good, I just need to take a break from this. Right now I just need to put blogging in the back seat for a few days so I can focus on some other things and leave the guilt of ignoring my blog and all the blogs I follow behind. I'll be back next Sunday maybe or the Monday afterward

Bye guys, see in a few days.

Happy reading,

Top Ten Tuesday (49)

This meme is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish

Top Ten Characters Who X (you fill in the blank -- examples: piss me off, are the popular kids, are bookish, would be my bff, that stole my heart, etc. etc.)
I am choosing top characters who grew. Which means the top ten characters that I feel had the best character arc or character development in their respected books/series.

Rachel from Crash Into You by Katie McGrarry
In the beginning of this book Rachel was a good person who is brave and smart. However, she never really stood up for herself, especially to her family who were jerks. And as the book progressed she learned that sometimes you need to stand up for yourself or else you will be stuck with the same problems. Iyt was gret to see this development from her.

Juliette from the Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi
A lot of people find Juliette annoying and so do I to some extent, however, the amount of how much she grows throughout this series really eclipse that. At the beginning of this series she started out as the victim and as the series progresses she realizes that she still is a victim and she no longer wants to be. She gets so strong throughout the whole series.

Vin from the Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson
Vin starts out as a survivor. She knows when to flee, when to be invisible, when to suck it up and take to punches which are all very good things to know but it results in a very sad life. It means she doesn't trust anyone and she doesn't have any friends. As the first book goes she realizes what she is missing and how friendship means you are loyal and you don't leave them behind.

Meg from Going to Far by Jennifer Echols
Meg really learns who she is in this book. At the beginning she is really confused at who she really is because all this crap happened in her life. This book is really about her figuring herself out and deciding who she wants to be and who she doesn't.

Isra from Of Beast and Beauty by Stacey Jay
This character arc is almost the same as Elisa's. Isra in the beginning of this book wants to be a good queen, she wants to protect and make society better for her people. However, she doesn't realizes how to do this. She asks instead of orders and at the end of this book she grew into a fierce queen who people should respect.

Elisa from the Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson
Elisa starts out this book series as a person low on self-confidence. She doesn't believe she is smart, beautiful, or anything that would make a good queen. However, throughout this book she realizes she is a queen and she needs to be a queen. She gains some self-confidence and basically becomes a queen. This was just amazing to read!!

Tris from Divergent by Veronica Roth
This is an obvious one. Tris grows so much in the first book, I don't know about the rest of them since I've only read the first one. However, there was a lot of development in her character in the first one. What I really love about this character arc, at least where the first book is concerned, is that she grows so much because she never before had an opportunity to. Before the events in this book she never had a chance to grow as a person and it's amazing how much she did grow when she was finally given the chance.

Ana from Incarnate by Jodi Meadows
Ana has been continuously told that she's worthless and doesn't deserve anything like happiness and a place in society her whole life. Not just by her mother but also by everyone it seems. What was just really sad was at the beginning of this book Ana believes all of that. So it was really great to see her go from a broken shell who wants a good life but doesn't believe she can get it to a strong independent woman who fights for herself and what she believes is right.

Harry Potter from the Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling
Harry has an amazing character arc but also a very different one. It's not like he grows as a person in the aftermath of a horrific event, he doesn't move on from grief, or anything like that. In these books we get to see him grow to adulthood and all the bumps and mistakes it took him to get there. We read him making mistakes and learning from them, we saw him go from an eleven year-old with his heart in the right place to a kind man that you do not mess with. I don't think I will ever read a character arc as great as Harry's.

That's my Top Ten, what was yours?

Review: The Archived by Victoria Schwab

 Grade: 4 Butterflies
Series: The Archived #1
Author: Victoria Schwab
Publisher: Hyperion

Goodreads Summary

Imagine a place where the dead rest on shelves like books.

Each body has a story to tell, a life seen in pictures that only Librarians can read. The dead are called Histories, and the vast realm in which they rest is the Archive.

Da first brought Mackenzie Bishop here four years ago, when she was twelve years old, frightened but determined to prove herself. Now Da is dead, and Mac has grown into what he once was, a ruthless Keeper, tasked with stopping often—violent Histories from waking up and getting out. Because of her job, she lies to the people she loves, and she knows fear for what it is: a useful tool for staying alive.

Being a Keeper isn’t just dangerous—it’s a constant reminder of those Mac has lost. Da’s death was hard enough, but now her little brother is gone too. Mac starts to wonder about the boundary between living and dying, sleeping and waking. In the Archive, the dead must never be disturbed. And yet, someone is deliberately altering Histories, erasing essential chapters. Unless Mac can piece together what remains, the Archive itself might crumble and fall.

I've heard some amazing things about this one. It seems that everyone whose read this one seems to love it! So, I was very curious about this one, not only because of the reviews but also because the plot sounded really cool. This book did not disappoint, it was such an amazing read!!!

First off I will say that there were some minor problems I had with this book, it wasn't completely outstanding. However, the good definitely outweighed the bad in this cause.

One of the best things about this one was the writing. This woman is an outstanding author!! She has such a way with words; it's just so beautiful to read! She was also able to take two completely different genres and then mash them together to make this book. This book had both contemporary themes, like handling with grief, and also very paranormal aspects, like the Archived. This author perfectly blended these two themes. Even though at times one dominated over the other they still worked perfectly with one another.

The world was also an amazing aspect in this one! This author built this world up wonderfully!! She took her time with giving us information without info dumping us and that just made the book all the more better. We got to see the world built slowly and expertly around us as we going farther into this one. The world was also so interesting and inventive! I loved reading about it and seeing it! It was just so cool!

However, even though the world building was amazing, one of the minor problems I had with this book was the relationship between the plot and world-building. The first half of this book the plot isn't really there. It is all basically introducing the characters, explaining the world, and setting up the plot for the last half. Even though we got wonderful world building and character set-up, we didn't get much story. The plot was like a very think string in the first half. The author gave us enough to make sure we were interested, but not a lot. The only reason I didn't put this one down during the first 100 or so pages was because of my interest in the world and the beautiful writing. While I was a little bored in the first half, in the end I was fine with this fact. I'm glad the author took her time with the world, even if the plot kind of suffered for it in the first half.

However, this book did have a shift in dominance. The first half the world-building was the dominate aspect. Although, the farther the book got in the story, the more dominate the plot became. It was like the thin piece of string gradually got wider and thicker the more the story progressed and the world-building slowly went to the back set.  However, don't think the plot wasn't good when it took off. When it finally became a main focus in the book it was amazing!! It captivated me and kept me on the edge of my seat even though I guessed who the bad guy was.

The only other kind of bad part of this book was the characters. The characters were solid, believable characters that had a good amount of depth. However, I never connected with them. I rooted for them, I felt for them, I just didn't connect with them. I didn't feel close to the MC or anyone else for that matter. So, when the end came I was on the edge of my seat because I wanted to see how it played out, not because I was afraid for the characters.

Overall this was one great book!! It had outstanding writing that was just so beautiful!! Along with a world that was brilliantly written and so unique and amazing! The plot started off a little slow but really took off in the last half of the book. This was just an all around great, enjoyable book!

 Book 3
My Review HERE

Goodreads Summary
Love or life.
Henry or their child.
The end of her family or the end of the world.
Kate must choose.

During nine months of captivity, Kate Winters has survived a jealous goddess, a vengeful Titan and a pregnancy she never asked for. Now the Queen of the Gods wants her unborn child, and Kate can't stop her--until Cronus offers a deal.

In exchange for her loyalty and devotion, the King of the Titans will spare humanity and let Kate keep her child. Yet even if Kate agrees, he'll destroy Henry, her mother and the rest of the council. And if she refuses, Cronus will tear the world apart until every last god and mortal is dead.

With the fate of everyone she loves resting on her shoulders, Kate must do the impossible: find a way to defeat the most powerful being in existence, even if it costs her everything.

Even if it costs her eternity.

Book 1:
While this book didn't meet all my expectations, it was still enjoyable. I really liked the direction this plot took. I thought it was really inventive and unique. I liked the tests and seeing all of the Greek Gods. It wasn't all that fast paced, but it still captured and  kept my attention.

I did feel a little bit disconnected with the romance in this one. Henry was a good guy I guess, but I never swooned over him. He was just there. I could see why Kate fell for him, but at the same time I didn't feel really invested with their relationship.

The characters were also really good. They were written well in my mind, but I just didn't feel that they grew in this book. We didn't get much character development in this book, but they weren't depthless. They still had some depth and they were enjoyable to read. I also really liked Kate in this one. I loved how devoted she was to her mother and how far she would go to save her. I really admired that trait in her.

Book 2:
So, in my mind, this book had some problems, but some improvements to the story as well. I still really liked Kate and I really felt for her in this one. Even though she's been an immortal for 6 months she was still thrown into this world and she really tried her best to adjust. She basically knows nothing about this world and yet she still puts her best effort to adjust to it. That would be hard too do, especially since I don't think any of the gods, Henry included, tried to help her.  And then with the arrival of Persephone I really felt sorry for her.

However, even though I liked Kate I still wanted to throttle her on several occasions throughout this book. You really thought that you would get a stable marriage? Even if you love him and he loves you, you were his last resort. It was you or death. Not only that but you also didn't have time after the 'marriage' to build the marriage. You really thought you were going into a stable relationship? really Kate? Sometimes you need to build that stability, it just doesn't just come out of love.

I liked how we got to see more of the world and the underground. We finally get to see something other then that mansion and it was great. I think that made the world feel more real to me, which is always a plus. I just love reading about Greek Mythology worlds, so it's no surprise that the world was the best part of this book.

Book 3:
I loved this book!! I know a lot of people hated it because of how Kate was, but I still loved it. I loved the plot, the characters got so much better, and it was just really good.

I loved this plot! I loved the twist that Kate got pregnant because that made everything more dangerous and serious. Now she had to take care of her baby, not just her. However, I am  little disappointed that it just skipped to the end of her capture. The book just skipped over the 9 months of her being held prisoner and I would have liked to have been introduced to this book at the beginning of her captured. I would have like to see at least some of when she was pregnant and how she was treated.  But the plot was still really good even with that.

I also want to comment on Kate's character. A lot of people don't like her because she doesn't really fight. She's more of a sacrificing person than a 'fight and hope that everything works out' person. A lot of people were annoyed at this and so was I in some degree. However, that is Kate. She is that type of person and I appreciated that the author created her outside of the regular YA girl mold. I liked  how she had a noticeable flaw to her character. Usually authors put a admirable flaw to their characters, like stubbornness, but Aimee Carter made her character have a different flaw then most YA characters. So, even though I was annoyed with Kate, I still loved that her character felt realistic because of her flaw.

Overall:
I really enjoyed this series! The first two book were enjoyable, but the last one was freaking great in my mind. I know a lot of people didn't like this series, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved the direction the plot went, the characters could have used more depth in the first two, but they were still good, and the world was really great. I love Greek mythology books and this one didn't disappoint. It had its flaws, but overall it was an enjoyable series.

Those are my views on this series, what were yours?

Updated Mini Review: Amulet vol. 1: The Stonekeeper by Kazu Kibuishi

I reviewed this one a while back and when I re-read this Graphic Novel I decided to do an updated review. The first review was pretty vague and I wanted to add more details.

Grade: Good
Series: Amulet #1
Author: Kazu Kibuishi
Publisher: Graphix

Graphic novel star Kazu Kibuishi creates a world of terrible, man-eating demons, a mechanical rabbit, a giant robot---and two ordinary children on a life-or-death mission.

After the tragic death of their father, Emily and Navin move with their mother to the home of her deceased great-grandfather, but the strange house proves to be dangerous. Before long, a sinister creature lures the kids' mom through a door in the basement. Em and Navin, desperate not to lose her, follow her into an underground world inhabited by demons, robots, and talking animals.
Eventually, they enlist the help of a small mechanical rabbit named Miskit. Together with Miskit, they face the most terrifying monster of all, and Em finally has the chance to save someone she loves.

This was a fast paced, captivating read! It starts out with a scene that will instantly grab your attention while simultaneously making you cry your eyes out. This graphic novel was great!! I thought it was an amazing set up for the series! I loved it and I can't wait to read the rest of the series. With that being said, I did have a few minor issues.

For one, the setting wasn't illustrated and focused on enough for my liking, so we didn't really get a clear sense of the world. Nor did the author gave us as much information as I would have liked, considering it was mostly set in a fantasy world. However, since this is the first in the series I overlooked them. I have the utmost confidence that this author will add on these things as the series goes on.

What I really loved about this graphic novel is the family aspect. The whole plot is basically driven forward by Emily trying to save her mom. Not only that, but when reading this graphic novel the author subtly put in scenes that allowed you to see the love each member of the family has for each other. You can see how much the Mom loves Navin and Emily and you can see that they love her back. I just loved how the main theme was this family aspect and how for you would go for your family. It's a breath of fresh air with what I've been reading.

I also really loved the characters in this book. I loved Emily! Emily has suffered a loss but she doesn't react the way most teenagers, maybe (I don't know her age), are portrayed. She doesn't act bratty or annoying and you can see she loves her family very much. She will do anything for her Mom and Brother  and I loved that about her.

Overall I really enjoyed this graphic novel! I really do. I think it's a great set up to the series. However, be warned that you might not like it as much as I did. It as sci-fi and fantasy aspects and it gets weird really fast. So, if you don't like that type of thing, if you don't like reading a plot that has weird in its discription, than this one might not be for you. However, if you are a fan of parnormal/fantasy, sci-fi then you will love this one.

Amulet Vol. 2: The Stonekeeper's Curse by Kazu Kibuishi

Grade: Great!
Series: Amulet #2
Author: Kazu Kibuishi
Publisher: GRAPHIX

In this thrilling sequel to AMULET #1: THE STONEKEEPER, Emily and her brother Navin head for Kanalis, a beautiful and mysterious city of waterfalls, where they hope to find the antidote for the poison that felled their mother. That cure lies in the eggs of a giant serpent atop Demon's Head Mountain, but the kids' archenemy, Trellis, is headed for the peak, too. A battle that will engulf all of Kanalis is looming. It's up to Em to triumph over evil while controlling the amulet's power . . . without losing herself!

This is the sequel to The Stonekeeper, a graphic novel that I am in love with! This one starts off about a week or two after the first one. The crew is just arriving at the city of Kanalis in hopes of curing Emily and Nevin's mother. I loved this one even more then the first one!! It was fantastic!! The plot progressed wonderfully and I love where this story is going! I also loved how this one improved on some of the minor problems I had with the first one.

What is interesting is how this one is only, at most, two weeks after the first and yet Emily and Navin look a lot older. In the first one it's like, "hi 8 and 10 year olds" and in this one its like "Nice to meet you 11 and 12 year olds". I don't know if this is just me or what.

This plot captivated me again and I just loved it! I love where this story is going!  I loved how it's like a fantasy quest type of thing and she has to learn how to control her powers! I just loved it! There wasn't a slow part of this book. So many things happened in it, but not to much to confuse you. It just really took you on a rollorcoaster of action.

I also liked how, since it's a quest type of book, we get to see more of the world. That was one of my problems with the first one, we just didn't get to see  lot of the world in that one. However, in this one we get to see a lot of the world and it was gorgeous! This author knows how to draw some amazing landscapes! He also starts to draw more backgrounds in scenes. In the last one most of the backgrounds were just blue blurs, but in this one he paid more attention to the background and I really appreciated that. I'm finding that for me with graphic novels, if the author doesn't pay attention to the backgrounds you don't feel like you're there in the world. And it gives the exact opposite effect then what graphic novels or suppose to. So, I'm really glad he started focusing on the backgrounds some more.

The best part of this one is the information we get. We learn about the 'curse' on the people, the origins of he evil Elf King, we learn about the underground rebellion, we also get info on the amulets, we learn just so much! And that really pushes the story on and gives us vital background information on the world. The characters also get more depth. Emily gets stronger in this one, even though she is still, thankfully, just as clear-headed and determined as in the first one. I really like hat about her, because the Amulet is a bad influence and it's nice to see for once a MC that doesn't get corrupted by the bad influence. The Elf Prince also gets some development and background information. He actually reminds me of Prince Zeko on Avatar the Last Airbender.

Overall, I am in love with this series!! It is amazing, captivating rollarcoast rides of fun, action, and fights. I love where the story is leading us, the world, everything about this series. I loved this one because the characters are growing, we as a reader learn more about the world, we also get to see more of the world. This graphic novel was just super fantastic! If you haven't started reading this series, do so now. It is a great series for beginners of Graphic Novels and at the same time a veteran graphic novel reader will still love it.

Stacking the Shelves (76)

"Stacking the Shelves" is a weekly theme hosted by Tynga's reviews . Feel free to join in if you want. In this theme I showcase all the books I got this week.

This week.....I kind of broke my book buying ban. I would be ashamed if I didn't get so many great books.

-E-Book-

Fire and Blood by Victoria Scott
I got this one on e-book because it was pretty cheap and I've heard nothing but praise for this one. It seems like everyone who reads it loves it.

-Physical Books-

The Fall of the House of Usher and Other Tales by Edgar Alan Poe
I have Poe's whole collection in one big pretty book. However, that's the thing, it's in one big book and I can't read it comfortably. So when I found this smaller book of his short stories I had to get it. It also helped that it was like $4.

The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch
I've wanted this one for a while. It looks pretty cool and since it's fantasy it's right up my alley.

The Hero of Ages by Brandon Sanderson
This is the final book in the Mistborn series and I am both excited and terrified to read it. This author isn't afraid to kill off characters and I don't want anymore to die!!!

Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson
I've heard so many great things about this one!! Added to that fact is that the author is Brandon Sanderson I knew I had to get it. This will be my next read for sure.

The Rithmatist by By Brandon Sanderson
I've heard very little about this book, but what I have heard says that this book is amazing!! So, when I saw it on the library shelf I knew I had to get it.

That's what I got this week, and yes I realize that half of these books are from Brandon Sanderson but he is one of my favorite authors now. What did you get this week?
Happy reading

Predictions and Hopes (4) The Forever Song

So, I came up with this segment and it is where I'll be spotlighting a couple books and telling you my hopes and predictions for it. The only thing is that the book can't be already released and has to be a next installment in a series. Also, tell my in the comments if you have or know another segment called Hopes and Predictions.

There will be spoilers in this post for The Immortal Rules & The Eternity Cure. Also, if you were lucky enough to get an ARC of this, please Don't spoil me. PLEASE!!! We can fangirl over it when it comes out and I finish it.

My review for first book HERE
My review for second book HERE

The Forever Song by Julie Kagawa
Releases April 15th

Allison Sekemoto once struggled with the question: human or monster?

With the death of her love, Zeke, she has her answer.

MONSTER

Allie will embrace her cold vampire side to hunt down and end Sarren, the psychopathic vampire who murdered Zeke. But the trail is bloody and long, and Sarren has left many surprises for Allie and her companions—her creator, Kanin, and her blood brother, Jackal. The trail is leading straight to the one place they must protect at any cost—the last vampire-free zone on Earth, Eden. And Sarren has one final, brutal shock in store for Allie.

In a ruined world where no life is sacred and former allies can turn on you in one heartbeat, Allie will face her darkest days. And if she succeeds, triumph is short-lived in the face of surviving forever alone.

I love this series! It has been one of my favorite series since the first one came out. I love the plot, the world, the characters, everything. So, of course the ending of The Eternity Cure killed me. KILLED ME!! I cried my eyes out when I read it. I don't want any more characters to die, none of them!!!  Even though I think Julie Kagawa is going to kill at least one more mainish character even though I really, really hope she doesn't. However, I know readers don't always get what they want and for some reason I really think she is going to kill off either Jackel or Kanin. I don't know why I think this, but I really really hope I'm wrong. I love both of these characters just so much, I don't want either of them to die.

I also think that Zeke is going to turn out not to be died. This might just me in denial about his death, but I don't think he is actually died. Since we never saw his corpse and this is a Vampire series, I think he was turned. What I picture/hope will happen is that she will hunt Sarren down find out Zeke isn't died and is a vampire. She will be happy but Zeke won't and he will try to kill himself because he can't handle being a monster. Again, this just might be the fact that I don't want him to be died, but I think this has a chance of happening. I also see the flaw in this theory. Since he is in some sense the cure, can he really turn into a vampire? I don't know, that was just my theory

I have no ideas or hopes on what will happen in this one besides those two things. I have no theories on what else will happen in the plot at all. Although,  I do have a theory on what the ending of this book will be like. It will either end on A) a happy hopeful note, with Allison and Zeke (If/hoping he's alive) together facing the world. There will be a little bit of hope for the world. Or B) Zeke dying/killing himself (If/hoping he's a vampire) and convincing Allison that she has to go on. Death will happen and she must go on and not go monster crazy.

What do you think/hope will happen in this one?

April TBR

I have a very ambitious TBR this month. I think this is because next month I have a huge research paper I need to write. So I want to  cram as much books as I can this month before May comes and I won't have time to read at all.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J. K. Rowling
Amulet Vol. 2: The Stonekeeper's Curse by Kazu Kibuishi
Amulet Vol. 3: The Cloud Searchers by Kazu Kibuishi
Bright Young Things by Anna Godbersen
The Winner's Curse by Marie Rutkoski
The Archived by Victoria Schwab
Sentinel by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Not Yet Released

The Forever Song by Julie Kagawa
I know I will read this as soon as it comes out. I need to know what happens!!!

That's what I want to read this month, what is your April TBR?
Happy reading
