Top Ten Words/Topics That Instantly Make Me Buy/Pick Up A Book (thanks to Karin at My Life In Books for this topic & graciously letting us use it)

This was really easy this week. All of these popped in my head instantly so it wasn't that hard to think of them. 

Witches/Magical beings.

I love books with witches in it. I love to see how the interprets their own thing about witches. 

Love stories

I am a sucker for love stories. And truth be told if I know book doesn't have a love story and any shape or form in it I will most likely not even read it.

Fairies.

I found my love in fairies through the Wondrous Strange series. I love all of the books with fairies in it. And like witches I love to see how the authors do their own thing with faires. 

Robin Hood

I love the story of Robin Hood. I just love it!!

Reincarnation

This whole idea fasinates me and again I love to see how different authors put their own spin on it.

Soul mates

Again I love soul mates in books. Its the only reason I picked up the Significance series by Shelly Crane. And I am really glad I did, because its a amazing!!

Bad Boys

This is another thing I am a sucker for. However, if I know a book has a bad boy doesn't mean I instantly want to read it just because of that. It goes higher on my TBR list, but it doesn't guarantee I'm going to read it that instant.

Mythology.

I love mythology and am constantly looking for more books with it in it. So, if I see this in the summary I will pick up that book.

Re-tellings

I really like re-tellings of fairy tales. However, there are some, like Cinderella, that have been done so many times that like the bad boys will make it go up on my TBR list, but won't guarantee I'm going to read it soon.

Assassins

Last but not least assassins. *Sigh* Assassins books, some of the most butt-kicking books I have read. Whenever the summary says assassins I will read that book. Assassin books are guaranteed to have some butt-kicking main characters and some awesome fight scenes. I love em.

I've heard some good things about this book. I was on the fence whether or not to read it, because contemporaries are just not my thing. Then I thought of how the contemporaries I do love were me taking a chance on them. So, I took a chance on this one, hopeing that it will be good. The end result wasn't very good. This book was such a disappointment.

First off I want to say that this book as a whole was decent. It was written well, the characters where nice, the story was very good. However, it's getting 2 Butterflies, because it wasn't my kind of book.  There was also a few problems with the book, but why I am giving it such a low rating is the simple fact that is wasn't my kind of book.

What made it not my kind of book was the plot. I picked this book up, because it sounded interesting. And I took a chance on it, because really emotional books just aren't really my thing. I finally found out why this is. Because most of the emotional books I read are just to vague. The author focuses more on the emotions aspects then the physical aspects of people. If that makes sense. I started out really loving this book, because this book wasn't like that. There was emotion, but not to much emotion. And the plot was good for a while.

You are probably thinking why did I give it such a low rating if it started out great. That is because of in the middle of the book the plot just stopped. The beginning of the plot was where Naomi was learning about her life that she can't remember. And the author did that well, you where engaged in the story. Then the plot slowed to a crawl. She was falling for James and she said "screw the past, I am who I am" I was fine with it, but that cause the plot to stop for a while. It was just her living her life and it picked back up after a while (a long while) and it was interesting, but not enough to save it from that middle at least for me. I just don't like books where the main characters just live their lives. It would have been fine if she was going through some emotional things, but by then she basically resolved all of those.

Also, I would have been fine with the middle, because I really like love stories, but the way this was written prevented me from connecting with their relationship. Actually it prevented me from connecting with anything. This book was written like Naomi was sitting right by you and told you this story of a part of her life. the story was in past tense and Naomi (Older Naomi) was narrating it. Books like that are fine, but I don't feel like I'm in the story. I felt so distant with this whole book. Whenever Naomi was feeling sad, angry, or whatever I didn't feel it. I felt nothing.  Most of you know that I need to feel connected to either the characters or the plot, but I felt nether in this book.

The only thing I really loved in this book was the relationships in it. I liked how it wasn't just falling in love it was also moving on. I can't really say much more without spoilers, but I just like how the author went on another more realistic path than most love stories goes on.

 One last thing I don't like.....vague the ending was. It didn't really end anything. I feel in stand-alones the ending has to wrap up at least most of the book. And this one didn't. It felt like an end of a chapter then ans ending for a book. I need closure in the ending of books and this ending didn't really have any of that.

I would recommend this book to people who like really slow books about peoples life and don't mind not feeling super close to the characters. However, if you aren't both of those, then I would tell you to skip this book, because while it is written well, it will disappoint.

Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac by Gabrielle Zevin.

I've heard some really great things about this one and I was going to buy it last week, but decided not to. When I went on amazon to order a few things this one was in their Bargain Books for 3.60. That defiantly beats 10 bucks at Barnes & Noble. So, I started this one already and it was good until I started hating the main character. I can't stand this girl.

The Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Orczy.

I read and reviewed this already (review HERE) I loved this book. So, I wanted my own copy and you never know with online shopping whether or not your going to like the copy and I really like this copy. So, I'm happy about that.

This Side of Paradise by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

I bought this one and the last two, because I just read the Great Gatsby (Review) and loved his writing. So, I wanted to read some more of his books. So, I got them.

Tales from the Jazz Age by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

This is just a few of his short stories and I got this mainly, because it has The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. I watched this movie and Loved it, I also cried about ten times. I never knew this was a book (well short story) I really want to read this story. I also like this copy, but the text has the font of a type writer. Which I am wary about, because I can read it, but it would take me a while to get used to it.

The Beautiful and the Damned by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

This one just looks good. Thats all I really have to say.

Q:  Is there a song that reminds you of a book?  Or vice versa?  What is the song and book?

This was was easy, because I am in love with music. This one was easy. There is most likely more then just these three that remind me of books, but they where the first in my mind. 

1. Change by Taylor Swift. This one reminds me of every signal destopion book out there. It just has that uprising feel to it. You could play it when they defeated the bad government or while their fighting the government. The best part to play it is when the government gets a win. Wins a battle. And the people are trying to fight back. 

2. Almost Lover by A Fine Frenzy. This reminds me of Sweet Evil by Wendy Higgins. This sums up Anna's and Kai's relationship toward the end of the book. And whenever I listen to it this book flashes in my mind.

3.Come Away To the Water by Maroon 5. This reminds my of the Hunger Games. If you listen to the lyrics it just reminds me of the reaping. 

4. Radioactive by Imagine Dragons. This one reminds me of Divergent by Veronica Roth. The epicness of this song is so close to epicness that is Divergent.

     I read this a long time ago and fell in love with it!! I love everything about it. It's humor, the plot, the characters, the writing and just about anything else you can think of. It's just a fun, enjoyable, lovable book. It's a book that will catch your attention and keep it. It will get you emotionally involved with it and then it will tear out you heart with the shock at the end. It's just a great book!!!

     Before I go any farther I want to say that this book does have it flaws. The plot, while its very engaging  is not the most epic plot out there. The characters, while they where fun and well written, they weren't the most memorable. The writing, while fun, doesn't blow you away, but I didn't care about any of that. This book made me fall in love with it despite it's flaws. It's like an Ewok (from Star Wars) their the most adorable thing out there. And you know there not the best warriors, but you don't care, because their just so adorable. This book was just like that.

     The plot, like I said up there wasn't the best I have ever read, but non-the less it is still fun, enjoyable, and enchanting. It is a fast paced book, but not to fast where your head starts spinning. It also had some twists and turns that I didn't see coming (that ending). Like I said before, you are engaged in this plot, you are invested in the characters life, any book with that in it is so much better.

     Like I said up there, the characters weren't the most memorable, except Sophie & Archer. Sophie is the snark queen. She is what made the humor in this book. You laugh about three times a chapter, because of her. She is also a character that you can't help but admire, she just has all of these qualities that makes her an awesome person. I just loved her!

     One of the things I really liked about this was how the author wrote all of the creatures. Somethings where cliche, but she added her own things to them. Like how the vampires communicate and the shifters. I also liked how the werewolves were werewolves. They were the Hollywood version that we all grew up with, instead of just wolves.

     The last thing I want to talk about is the relationship between Sophie and Archer. I loved the exchanges they had, they were so fun to read. They also had something that very few fictional couples have and that is chemistry. You could just feel their chemistry on the pages. It seems like very few fictional characters have this. It made reading this book so much better. I also liked how, even though Sophie was attracted to Archer they fell in love over time. I love books that do that.

     I would recommend this book to everybody. It is such a great book! and while it does have some flaws it will make you look over them with it's lovable quality.

Predictions & Hopes (1)

So, I came up with this segment and it is where I'll be spotlighting a couple books and telling you my hopes and predictions for it. The only thing is that the book can't be already released and has to be a next installment in a series. So, its up to date and everybody can join into the discussion, because some people wouldn't be able to join in if your talking about a second book when the forth is already released. Anyway, on to my hopes and predictions. Also, tell my in the comments if you have or know another segment called Hopes and Predictions.

Evertrue by Brodi Ashton.

We get nothing.

First off I want to say I love this name, it just sounds really cool.

For the cover I predict that it will have a color scheme of white. The first book was tan and red, the second book was black, I think that white is a color that would go great with them. Not to mention white is the color of smoke and all of the other covers has smoke in it.

I hope that the book tells us why Cole did that. I don't know why he would force the girl he loves to do that. When I read that part I thought that he didn't love her, because you don't do that to a person you love. He knew she never wanted that and yet he did it anyway. Then I read the  novella and he does love her. So, why the heck would he do that?? It wasn't in her best interest, what would have been in her best interest would have been to tie her up until Jack died so she wouldn't be in danger. Instead he tricked her and deceived her, you don't do that to the person you love! I hope its revealed why he did it and if the reason was to force her to become queen then there is no hope for him and I hope he just goes away. I know that sounds bad, but if that's the reason then he doesn't deserve her.

I also predict that something is wrong with Jack, did anyone else pick up on that vibe? Something was wrong with him. I'm pretty sure that is going to come into play sometime in this book.  Also a little side note, is this a trilogy or what?

I hope there is magic is in this book. I was just re-reading Throne of Glass and in the beginning when their going through the forest it talks about magic, fairies, elves, all those kinds of creatures. And I hope in this one there is something to do with those creatures. And that we figure out if Celaena has magic, because I really want to know this.

I also hope that She and  Captain Westfall are thrown into a situation where they have to be together. Where Westfall can learn that she isn't all bad, that she is a good person. And where there relationship blossoms a little more, because I want her to end up with him. I just like him better, and think he is better for her. 

The last thing I hope happens, is I hope the thing with the king is evaluated more. Wouldn't that make an awesome book if she starts to figure that out? I would love it!

Top Ten Books I Thought I'd Like MORE/LESS Than I Did

This was a pretty easy question this week. The first five are ones I thought I would like and ended up being dissopointed with them. And the last five are ones I thought I wouldn't like and ended up loving.

1. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

I just reviewed this book and I really did like this book, but it wasn't as amazing as I thought it would be.

2. Touch of Death by Kelley Hashway.

This was one of my most books for 2013 and it fell flat in everyway. 

3. The Nightmare Affair

This was another one that I thought was going to be amazing, but it wasn't. It was still good, but not really good.

4. The Assassin's curse

Ditto to The Nightmare Affair 

5. Nevermore Kelly Creagh  

This was a DNF for me, I thought I was going to love it, because its based on one of Edger Allen Poe's poem. And I love all of his works. It just wasn't good for me. 

6. Obsidian By Jennifer L. Armentrout

This was the second book I read from her and before this one I didn't have much faith in her, because its about alians. I thought that no one could make a good book about alains, I was so wrong. I love this book and this whole series!

7. Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder

I picked this one up randomly from the shelf and read it, I loved it!!

8. Leaving Paradise by Simone Elkeles.

I don't really like contemporaries, there just not my thing. So, I didn't think I would like iit, but I ended up loving it!

9. The Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson

I started this one and stopped, because it wasn't very fast. I started it again and didn't have any hope that it would be good, but again it was such a good book!!!

10. The Scarlet Pimpernel by Emmuska Orczy 

I read this for school and all of previous books I read for school where awful  So, I thought this one would also be awful. I was pleasantly surprised that it was good.

Review: Vessel by Sarah Beth Durst

     This book is like a rollercoaster. It has it's really high aspects and it has it's very low aspects. When I was finished reading this book I had so many mixed emotions. I loved the plot, and I hated the characters. And while Sarah Beth Durst wrote a very enjoyable book, I couldn't give it more then 3 Butterflies because of the beginning.

     The beginning of this book, to put it simply, was bad. The plot wasn't really solid, it just floated around. I could understand this, because in most books the beginning is just to introduce the characters and such. Then the plot slowly seeps in. And that is what happened with this book. However, what I really didn't like was for the first half of this book I hated the characters. Hated them. I didn't like how they just accepted the fact that they where going to die. I can understand why they would do it, but not how they don't question it and not have some ill feelings toward the gods for making them die. Everyone says its fine, because then you go into the dreaming (their afterlife), but if that place is so good why do the gods want to get out of there and into the real world? No one asked this question! Gar!! They just annoyed me.

     However, the characters got better after the first half of the book, I don't know if it's because I learned to tolerate them, or because of character development, but whatever it was it made the characters better so i'm happy. Also, the characters didn't seem real to me, they were a little two dimensional. Everything that was on the surface is all that you got,there wasn't anything deeper in them. However, that aspect of the also withered away as the story progressed.

     I was so annoyed with the characters in the beginning that the only thing that kept me going was the premise of the plot. Like I said, the plot took a while to become a solid plot, but even before that something about the authors writing was enchanting enough to keep me interested until the plot did get going. And when the plot got going it got going. It was super fast, it had mystery, suspense, lots of action and I really loved where it was going, I just loved this plot! However, I was kind of confused, because the tag line for this book is "She'll have to defy the gods in order to save her clan" and that didn't come into play until the very last part of the book. So, that confused me a little.

     Also, a little side note I am really glad that there was a love triangle in this book, because her relationship with Korbyn was built upon the fact that he was a god and he was hot. It developed me than that, but it was built upon that and I really didn't like it. So, I was really glad when the second guy came into the picture.

     All in all, I really enjoyed reading this book, the plot overshadowed the characters and I really liked how the author ended it. I would recommend it to any fantasy fan, but I would also warn them that the characters aren't the best. And if you can get through the first half they will get better and the book will be very enjoyable and good.

So, this is just a book with a lot of short stories in it from some popular authors. I know I am not going to read it from cover to cover,but I will read a few of the short stories inside.

The Archived by Victoria Schwab.

I have wanted to read this since is came out and I have heard nothing but great things about this. So, I really can't wait to read this!

Vessel by Sarah Beth Durst.

I am currently reading this and its good, but there isn't much of a plot so far.

I am going to be in this book tour and I got a review copy from the author and I know its going to be my next read for sure. This book looks so good!

A little note before reading on. I said in my review of the Scarlet Pimpernel that I didn't think it was fair to grade Classics, other then to say if it was good or not, because they stood the test of time. So, from now on when I review a classic I will just say whether I recommend it or not.

     I read this book, because I wanted to read more classics and because of the movie. I just never wanted to pay 15$ for a book. Before I bought it I heard a lot of hype about how amazing it is and how its some people favorite book. So, I expected going into this book that it was going to be the best classic and maybe the best book I have read. While it is a very good book, it didn't really stand out to me. It was both beautiful and boring.

    This book is basically about how unfair life can be and how staying in the past can destroy your life. The narrator, Nick, is recounting the summer he meet Jay Gatsby and the events that follow. I really liked how the affair and everything else was told through Nick's eye instead of the people doing the stuff. I found it really interesting to see the affairs and misdeeds of others through the eyes of a very honest man. The contrast between that was very interesting to read.

    The writing in this book is some of the best I have ever read, its just so beautiful. It's able to captive and enchant you with just a few words. The words just flows so flawlessly that it sounds like poetry in some places. And this whole book is quoteable, I have more then twenty quotes from this book that are just amazing.

    The bad thing about this book is that there isn't much of a plot. It got so boring in some places that the only thing that kept me going was the writing. The book isn't a plot based book is what I came up with, its more of thoughts about the unfairity of life and the rich. It was interesting to read, don't get me wrong, but it just wasn't fast paced.

    The characters in this book was so beautifully flawed, they have the flaws that you can see normal people having so it makes you feel for the character  At the end of this book my heart just ached for Gatsby, he was such a fool, but you can see yourself doing exactly what he did and your heart just broke.

    This book is a beautiful written book about how, no matter how hard you try, you can't repeat the past. And if you try it can destroy your life and leave you friendless. Even though it didn't have much of a plot, it was still interesting and the writing will captive you. So, I recommend this classic to everyone.
