Discussion Time: Publishing Annoyances.
This week I thought I would a discussion about publishing annoyances. And I don't have as many of these than I thought I would, I don't know if it's because I'm just not remembering or if I just don't have many of them. Anyway, here are my three publisher annoyances.
The First is when the change the covers half way through the series. I am fine if they change it after the last book has been published because then the books will still match on my shelf. But when they change it anytime between the first one releasing and the last one releasing I get really annoyed, because than they don't match at all and I like it when they match. And it's even worse if the new covers are ugly, because than they're ugly.
However, there is an upside to this and that is if the new covers are prettier and if they match the content of the books themselves better. I will still be a little annoyed because they won't match on my shelves but if the covers are prettier than it takes the edge off the annoyance.
The second is closely related to the first one and that is when they re-deign the covers and it affects the height of the book. How I organize my bookshelves is through height. I don't like my shelves to be bumpy, I like them to be the same size. And when they change the height it annoyed the heck out of me, because now the shelf will be bumpy. Although, I think I may be the only one it annoys.
The Last one is when the publishers don't put a map in the beginning of a fantasy books. I love fantasy books and maps in the beginning of the books helps me a lot. So many times I have been completely lost in a fantasy book when they are references places or planning a trip. And even when I'm not confused it helps me picture the world better. So, it annoys the heck out of me when publishers don't put the map in the book! Why wouldn't they put a simple map in the book?
Comment below if you agree, disagree with what I said or tell me some of your publishing annoyances that weren't listed here.
Happy reading

I agree with you on them all!
ReplyDeleteCover changes are SO annoying and I really cringe when they turn from pretty okay to plain ugly. Like, ugh.
Height thing is a really important factor too! There's this series that didn't go through any cover changes, but they just changed the paperback size when the second book was released. Like, what? Does that even make any sense to do?
And I like maps! When books list out all the places and tells us where is where, I don't map it out in my head. I just ignore all the directions because hey, I have better things to memorize. It'll be awesome if I can just flip to a map and be like voila - a map so I don't have to think! :D
I agree with you on all of these especially when they change the covers. I preferred the old Across the Universe covers for the Beth Revis series and now book 3 is still gorgeous but way too different and it looks like a middle grade book.

As for maps on fantasy books, cine I mostly read eBooks, my problem is that when there are maps, I can't freaking read them. What the hell is the point of having the map on the eBook version if you are not going to allow to zoom into it so you can actually read the city names and stuff? Ugh.

I know!! That just sucks. It's why I usually never read fantasy books on ebooks. And I don't know why they insist on putting a map on the E-book, especially since they're always so freaking small!! You would think it would be a waste of money for them to put maps you can't read on there.
ReplyDeleteThat's the one that always annoyed me! I have never read Across the Universe, but I always loved the covers. And the covers where slowly convincing me to read the books, so I was so freaking sad when they changed them :(.
ReplyDeleteI hate, hate, hate it when cover changes make pretty covers into ugly covers . It just like, why the hell would you do that? No one likes these covers!!
ReplyDeleteAnd that always baffled me. It's just like why the hell would you change nothing else, but the height. I honestly want to know what publishers are thinking when they do that. It's just like why?
I just love maps! For all the reasons you listed there. It's just so nice to flip a page and have that whole world in that one page. And it also helps when characters in that book are referring to a place that you don't know and you just flip to that map and be like There it is!!!
