I'm Back!!!

I'm back guys!! I went on a full week of blissful vacation, I haven't been on a vacation this long in a few years. So, it was heaven. Keep in mind, I went to a resort in Mexico where it didn't get below 75 degrees and I live in a place where in winter it doesn't get above 25 degrees and it only gets up to that on very rare and warm days. Like right now it is -5 degrees and that is the high for the week.

I plan to get fully back into blogging starting with a review later today and then Saturday with Stacking the Shelves. But for now pictures!!!

A beautiful sunset

A gorgeous Sunrise

A random Palm tree (I didn't think there would be palm trees there.)

To compare where I went and what I came back to here are two pictures taken from the plane back.
The first one it what Me and my Family where leaving. Isn't it beautiful with the ocean and the beach and the green?

The second one it what we were coming back to. My wonderful state of the Frozen Tundra. Isn't the solid blanket of snow and ice just wonderful?

So that's it. I had a wonderful vacation with my family and I really hope we get to do it again.

Happy reading.

I'm Going On Vacation

Hello guys. I won't be on the blog or the blogoshpere because I am going on vacation. Yay!!!

description

haha

If you couldn't tell I am pretty freaking excited for this vacation. I live in a place that has really cold winters and I'm going on vacation in a place that has warm winters. I'm so freaking excited, it won't get below 50 degrees. Yay!!

description

Me and my family are going to a resort for a whole week. So, I won't be back to the blog until next week sometime, probably the 28th for the Top Ten Tuesday. I just wanted to make sure I put a post up explaining why there won't be any posts up  and that I won't be commenting on anyone's posts for the next week or so.

Bye and happy reading

Vacation TBR

If you don't know, I am going on vacation next week and I thought I would showcase what books I'm bring with. I unknowingly made a theme for these books and this was fantasy. Almost all of these books are fantasy.

Physical copies.

The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson
Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson
The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss

I've heard amazing about both Mistborn and the Name of the Wind. They seem like really epic books. However, The Way of Kings was an impulse buy and I don't really know what its about. And I didn't know it was going to be that long, it's over 1200 pages long!

E-Books

Unhinged by A. G. Howard
Defy by Sara B. Lerson

I can't wait to read Unhinged!! I've heard that it's an amazing sequel and I really want to see if they are right.
Defy also looks really good and the cover is just gorgeous!!

So that's what I'm bring to vacation. Have you read any of these? What did you think of it? And which one do you think I start first?

Review: Wild Cards by Simone Elkeles

Grade: 3 Butterflies
Name: Wild Cards
Author: Simone Elkeles
Publisher: Walker Books for Young Reader
Pages: Hardcover, 342 pages

Goodreads Summary

After getting kicked out of boarding school, bad boy Derek Fitzpatrick has no choice but to live with his ditzy stepmother while his military dad is deployed. Things quickly go from bad to worse when he finds out she plans to move them back to her childhood home in Illinois. Derek’s counting the days before he can be on his own, and the last thing he needs is to get involved with someone else’s family drama.

Ashtyn Parker knows one thing for certain--people you care about leave without a backward glance. A football scholarship would finally give her the chance to leave. So she pours everything into winning a state championship, until her boyfriend and star quarterback betrays them all by joining their rival team. Ashtyn needs a new game plan, but it requires trusting Derek—someone she barely knows, someone born to break the rules. Is she willing to put her heart on the line to try and win it all?

I read Perfect Chemistry a few years ago and enjoyed it even though I had quite a few problems with it. Wild Cards was the same way. There isn't as much hype about this book that there was for perfect Chemistry, but I've heard and read a few things about it, some good some bad. But it got me curious so I picked this book up and while I enjoyed it I had a few problems with it.

First thing that I didn't like about this book was the majority of the characters. Ashtyn, one of the main characters, was really annoying at times. In the beginning she annoyed me to no end. In the beginning she came off as a whinny brat who seemed a little ditsy at times and that annoyed me so much. As the book goes on she gets better. I don't know if it's because I got used to her personality or because her character evolved, but what ever it was she got better. I actually liked her at the end.

Another issue I had with Ashtyn is one I had with almost every character. It felt like she had very little depth. She was supposed to be this kind of broken girl with a awful family who leaves her without a thought and that was suppose to give her depth, but it didn't. I think this problem had its roots in the plot, will explain more about this later in the review, but even if it did I couldn't connect with her because she didn't feel like a person.

This book also made me realize a book pet peeve I have, and this is filler characters. You know the characters that seem to have been made just for you to hate, or get annoyed at? Yeah, this book was filled with them. All the side characters barely had any depth. It felt like her dad was made just so you would feel sorry for Ashtyn and her sister was made just to be annoyed at and Landon was made just to hate. They had no depth!! At all. The only saving grace in this book character wise was Derek and his Grandmother. These where the only characters that had a substantial amount of depth and felt like real characters and real people. Without them this book would be getting 2 Butterflies.

Now the plot. This plot I had mixed feelings about. It was enjoyable and it kept me reading. However, the writing style really took away from the plot. For some reason you didn't feel part of the book. It felt like you where watching play from the farthest seat from the stage. You weren't captivated and transported to the world, at most you were looking through a foggy window into their world. This, I think, is where my problem with Ashtyn's character is rooted in. When reading this you can see the author trying to give her depth and that the filler characters purpose was to make people sympathize with her and see why she is the way she is, but since you aren't in the story you don't get the affect the author was trying to make.

Not only did this weird thing with the plot take away a lot of Ashtyn's depth, it also took away some goodness from this book. I really wish I could have liked this book more, because I liked Ashtyn's and Derek's love story. But since I didn't feel in the story or the world I didn't feel connected with their characters or their relationship. So I didn't get the full effect of their love story, if that makes any sense.

The last thing I want to talk about is the ending. I feel like it was really rushed. The whole book seemed to be leading up to the point where Ashtyn and Derek has to decide whether or not they where going to be together. However, when it got to that part in the story it felt really rushed. It felt like it got to point A to point B without any in between.

Overall I am giving this book 3 Butterflies, because even though I had a few issues with it, it was still an enjoyable book. I still enjoyed reading it and I read it in two days. I liked the love story between Derek and Ashtyn and I would go out a buy myself a copy of it. I would recommend it to anyone who likes Simone Elkeles's books, contemporary, or love stories. Just be warned that it isn't a book that will blow you away, it was an average book to me that I enjoyed reading.

This book got......

3 Butterflies
Basic, nothing special.

Happy reading.

Review: Eternity Cure by Julie Kagawa

Grade: 4.5 Butterflies
Series: Blood of Eden #2
Author: Julie Kagawa
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Pages: Hardcover, 434 pages

Goodreads Summary

Allison Sekemoto has vowed to rescue her creator, Kanin, who is being held hostage and tortured by the psychotic vampire Sarren. The call of blood leads her back to the beginning—New Covington and the Fringe, and a vampire prince who wants her dead yet may become her wary ally.

Even as Allie faces shocking revelations and heartbreak like she’s never known, a new strain of the Red Lung virus that decimated humanity is rising to threaten human and vampire alike.

I read The Immortal Rules last year and loved it!! It was on my top 13 of 2013 it was that amazing. When I finished it I wanted to go out and read the second one right away, but I didn't because I heard it had a killer cliffhanger. So I finally read it and loved it!!! I might have liked it better then the first one, it was just such a great book!! I loved every part of it!!

So the plot in this book was really captivating!! In the majority of the book it was fast paced and gripping and even when it slowed down a bit in some places it was still captivating and gripping. I just couldn't get enough of the plot, it was just so good!! It was so great, and so well written and so well thought out. I just loved it!!

Speaking of the writing, I would like to talk about my one and only small little issue I had with this book. The writing in this book, like in everyone of Julie Kagawa's books, was amazing to a point. It was a figurative and captivating!! And this woman can paint a picture like no other with just her words. However, sometimes she takes a little long to paint the picture. Let me explain this a little more. Several times throughout me reading
this book I would be on a page and since I have no will power my eyes would flick to the next page or the next paragraph just to see what happens next. And there would be no dialogue. Sometimes for several pages there would be no dialogue, just her explaining what the world looks like and setting the mood.  And when your sitting there reading the book you get really annoyed with this and think she writes about the setting to much. However, when you go back and read the pages you were suppose to it doesn't feel like she wrote to much. You would fly through those pages and in your mind's eye you would get such a clear picture of wherever the heck that characters where. So, this lead me to one second hate her writing style and in the next second love it again. So, a little bit of mixed feelings there.

Besides that I had no other issues with this book. Everything was just so amazing!!! Allie, like in the last book, was freaking amazing and such a kick-butt character. She is one of my all time favorite characters, she had such depth to her that she felt like a real person. She had flaws and she had weaknesses along with strengths. She was and is such a well written character. That also goes for the rest of the characters, even the side characters had an amazing amount of depth and where so well written. Julie Kagawa is amazing at writing characters.

Not only is she good with characters, she is amazing at romance. Zeke and Allie's relationship felt very real to me. It didn't feel like a generic relationship, it seemed so real to me. They had hardships, doubts, fears, but they still loved each other. And they have chemistry. Whenever they interact you can just feel the sparks coming off the pages. But it isn't just chemistry, they feel like they love each other. They love each other so much that you can't help but love their relationship and rooting for it.

One of my favorite things about this series is that Julie Kagawa doesn't try and romanticize vampires. In mythology vampires are these ruthless monsters who don't care if they kill people and I like how Julie Kagawa doesn't ignore that but brings it the surface. Not only that but the author does great at blurring lines that should be black and white. Throughout the whole book Allie struggles with not being a monster, she doesn't want to kill people. And yet she learns to love a person who embraces his monster side and you as the reader also learns to love said character. Julie Kagawa does a great job at making her readers ask very deep questions and I love books that make me do that!

Overall this book blew me away!!! I feel like I didn't say that enough in this review, but this book was so freaking amazing and just blew me away!!! I loved it and I can't wait for the next one to come out, because I need to know what happens next!! That was a killer cliffhanger all right.

This book got...

4.5 Butterflies
Beautiful, this is a great book.

One Challenge today.
Challenges
Bookish Wedding -- Harley Bear Book Blog

For the Bookish Wedding all you have to do is answer the questions.

1. Which fictional character would you marry?
Aiden St. Delphi from the Covenant series by Jennifer L. Armentrout. He is tall dark and dreamy, not only that he is loyal and loves a person for who they are.

2. Who would be your Maid of Honor or Best Man?
Gwen from the Mythos Academy series by Jennifer Estep. She is fun, She is loyal and she would be the best best friend. She would never leave your side even if things got rough.

3. Which fictional world would you want to get married in?
Faerie Realm from the Faerie Path series by Frewin Jones. This would just be the perfect place to be married in. It has so many wonderful and beautiful places that would be perfect for having the wedding.

4. Who would you pick to play the music at your wedding?
Celaena Sardothien from the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas. It would be so freaking amazing if she would sing some of her songs.

5. Who would be your photographer?
Gosh, I have no idea, maybe Alyssa Gardner from Splintered by A. G. Howard. Only because she is the only fiction photographer/artist I know of.

6. Who would you sit at the singles table (and hope they'd fall in love)?
Dee Black from the Lux series by Jennifer L. Armentrout and Kenji Kishimoto from the Shatter Me series. I feel like these two would be perfect for each other. They both just want to have fun but at the same time they have a very serious side to them. They just seem perfect for each other.

7. Who would be your flower girl or ring bearer?
My flower would be Maria from the Significance series by Shelly Crane. She is just such a cute little girl!!

8. Who would you want to plan the bachelorette/bachelor party?
Ellie from the Angelfire series by Courtney Allison Moulton. Even though she isn't a party girl per say, but I still think she would be able to plan a great party!!

9. At the wedding, who would be the first on the dance floor?
Daemon and Katy from the Lux series by Jennifer L. Armentrout. They love each other so much and I can see Daemon convincing her to go on the dance floor.

10. Who would give a speech or toast?
Kelly Winslow. I don't know why I picked her, but she would be another really great best friend and I can see her giving a speech.

11. Who would catch the boquet or garter?
Valek from Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder would catch the garter and Yelena would catch the boquet. So they would finally marry and have little assassin magicians babies and the whole fandom will be happy.

That's how I'm doing so far in the read-a-thon, how about you?

Challenges for today

Create a Story -- Never Too Fond of Books
Book Spine Poetry -- The Book Spines

The rules for the Create a Story challenge are simple.
  1. Open your current book to the last page you read.
  2. Using the last word of every line, create a poem or story. You must use every word (but they do not have to be in order), and you may add punctuation as necessary. If a word is split between the end of the line and the beginning of the next one, you may choose whether or not to use it.
  3. Create a post (or tweet or video) that showcases your masterpiece. If you don’t have anywhere else to post it, you can add it as a comment here and use the comment link as your entry.
  4. Add it to the linky on this post.
The book I used was Wild Cards by Simone Elkeles page 34

My words are: Unrecognizable, voice, impressed, be, in, for, flags, in, loudly, jobs, I, will, says, she, the, blab, mumble, she, an, attention, out, tonight,  but, night, and, sure, of, summer.

My story.
She mumbles in an unrecognizable voice.
She says I blab for attention.
But tonight, summer will loudly be impressed

Challenges

There are two
Double Date Book Challenge -- Writing My Own Fairy Tale
Poem Challenge -- Pen in Her Hand

The rules for the double date challenge are simple
"You must pick two books that you would recommend someone read together (like a double date!) and explain your reasons for the recommendation. You can recommend the books because they are in the same genre, one is a retelling of the other, they deal with the same issues, or maybe they're complete opposites, whatever you want as long as you can explain why they should be read together. Just one exception: they cannot be books from the same series."

So my picks for these are.....

Insomnia by J. R. Johansson and Ten by Gretchen McNeil
These are both so freaking scary!! I was terrified when I was reading them. And they're total different stories so it wouldn't be like you were reading the same scary story.

Cinder by Marissa Meyer and Of Beast and Beauty by Stacey Jay
These are both such great re-tellings, I loved them!! I feel like they would go so perfectly with one another.

Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins and The Heist Society by Ally Carter.
Even though these are in different genres they are both so fast paced and fun. I had so much fun reading both of these. If you want to read a book that will just lift your spirits I would suggest either of these.

Incarnate by Jodi Meadows and The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa
These are both set in different worlds then ours and they are both slower paced, but they are really great. Not that the Immortal Rules doesn't have any action, but I feel both of these focus more on characters and emotions. But please don't think either of these have action in them, they do and they are just simply great  books.

The second challenge, the poem challenge is also simple.
  1. Just choose a novel from any genre, print or ebook, that you’re reading or have finished. Pick a number between 1 and 10, and you’re ready to start!
  2. Flip to a page at random. Using your trusty number (for example, let’s use 7) count down 7 lines. Then count in 7 words. Write that word down. Repeat this process until your have fourteen words.
  3. Delete two words and add in two words of your own.
  4. Now arrange your words any way you like to finish your found poem.

My poem:
I picked the Eternity Cure by Julie Kagawa. Here are my words, only, following, his, if, hospital, stick, of, goal, who, starts, thought, cell, knock, behind. And I will delete hospital and stick and replaced them with the and to.

following his goal
who thought behind
of the cell
starts to knock
if only.

So my poem made no sense and to tell you this was hard. It took me so long to make this poem.

So those where the challenges and my updates. How are you doing in the read-a-thon so far?

Review: Switched by Amanda Hockings

Grade: 3 Butterflies
Series: Trylle
Author: Amanda Hocking
Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin
Pages: Paperback, 318 pages

When Wendy Everly was six years old, her mother was convinced she was a monster and tried to kill her. Eleven years later, Wendy discovers her mother might have been right. She’s not the person she’s always believed herself to be, and her whole life begins to unravel—all because of Finn Holmes.

Finn is a mysterious guy who always seems to be watching her. Every encounter leaves her deeply shaken…though it has more to do with her fierce attraction to him than she’d ever admit. But it isn’t long before he reveals the truth: Wendy is a changeling who was switched at birth—and he’s come to take her home.

Now Wendy’s about to journey to a magical world she never knew existed, one that’s both beautiful and frightening. And where she must leave her old life behind to discover who she’s meant to become…

So, this was the first Amanda Hocking books I read and this is where my love for her books grew. I read this series a few years back and loved it!! I thought it was really great and the world was so very interesting. And I wanted to re-read this series, or at least start re-reading it, before the year ends.

Why I really love this book series so much is the paranormal creatures in it. I love how Amanda Hocking wrote about trolls, of all things this book is about trolls. I just really like how she took such a known paranormal creature that no one really writes about and put a twist on it. It was such a unique concept that I just fell in love with it! And the author wrote about it so well that it really sticks with you even months after you've read it.

I just love the world that this is set in!! I know it's just set in the U.S but I love the society the 'trolls' live in. I really liked how they lived and the system their world has. I really liked this because the author made it flawed. How they do the 'changeling' thing and how the trackers are basically slaves. I just really liked this, because I think it would have taken away from the story if this society was perfect. The fact that it isn't brings a lot of tension to the plot.

I also really loved the writing style in this book. The author explains the world building so well that you get such a vivid picture of the world in your mind. And I almost never encounter this in world building. I also really liked how she wrote the abilities thing. We haven't seen much of anybodies abilities yet, but she far it's pretty cool.

Now on to the things I didn't really like. I've seen a few reviews on this series where the reviewers say that the main character, Wendy, is a little....a lot annoying. Whenever I saw this I didn't really understand it. The first time I read this I really loved Wendy, but now that I've re-read it I still love her but I can understand what they mean. Wendy is a very self-centered person. She not vain or thinks that she is better then everyone, she is just very self-centered. She never thinks about how a decision she makes will affect other people, just how it will affect her. This annoyed me a lot. But don't worry people who've read this and didn't continue the series because of this, she gets better throughout the series.

The next thing I didn't really like was the romance. Don't get me wrong, I liked Finn, but the romance was just so cliche and predictable. Did anyone not see that she was going to fall for Finn from just reading the first 40 pages? Anyone? I also didn't like how Wendy only really thought about Finn. It was Finn this, Finn that, What's Finn doing, Where's Finn, it got really annoying!

Overall I thought that this was a good start to a series. There were some aspects that I didn't like, mainly the main character, but the good out shined the bad. The world and the paranormal creatures written about where just so interesting and well written that I couldn't help but really enjoy this book. I would recommend it to any Amanda Hocking fan and any paranormal fan.

Top Ten Tuesday (40)

This meme is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish

Top Ten Goals/Resolutions For 2014 (bookish, not bookish or a blend)

Comment more and just basically be more interactive
I really want to comment more on people's post and basically be more interactive in the blogasphere.

Read 100 books
This is my Goodreads challenge this year and I think I have a good chance to accomplish it. Last year I read 91 books. So I think I can do this.

Actually Complete 2 of my 3 2014 reading challenges
I love doing reading challenges and last year I signed up for four and I complete none. So this year I want to complete at least two

Post more reviews
I feel like I've been slacking in this department so I really want to focus on writing more reviews and publishing them, that's the killer to. I one time had like three reviews to post up and kind of forgot about them for about two months, which isn't good. So I want to write more reviews and then post them as soon as I can.

Post more original content, like Predictions and Hopes
I really want to do more with my blog then just posting reviews and memes. So I want to publish more discussions and Predictions and Hopes.

Start posting series reviews
I really want to do this, it sounds really fun. It seems like it should give the perfect conclusion for reviewing all the books in the series.

Post more Manga reviews
I love Manag and I want to review some of them.

Re-do my blog design
I've had the pink flowers since I started the blog and I really want to change it.

Those are my blogging resolutions for this year, what are yours?

Bout of Books 9.0 Goals.

Bout of Books

I am doing this read-a-thon. I am not planning on reading a lot of books, because this week is going to be very busy for me, but I still wanted to try and do it.

Like I said, I this week is going to be very busy for me. Finals are coming up and I need to work ahead in school since I am going on vacation two weeks from now and need to have it all done. So it's going to be a very, very busy week, but I am going to try and read at least a little bit each day. I know I'm not going to be able to devote hours and hours every day to reading, but I'm going to read during all of my free time.

Books:
  • Fullmetal Alchemist 3-in-1 by Hiromu Arakawa
  • Rules of Atteraction by Simone Elkeles
  • The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken
  • The Eternity Cure by Julie Kagwawa

Goals:
  • Read at least two books, more if I can
  • Review all of the books I read
  • Comment, comment, comment on other people's post.
  • Participate in at least two of the daily challenges.

So, I want to read two of these books, but it will probably turn out to be two and a half, because I am just about half way through the Eternity Cure. So, if I could finish that and then two more books after that I will be happy. Heck, I would be happy if I only read one books after the Eternity Cure.

I will also be doing like two or so updates throughout the week. Maybe more if I do some more challenges. So this will be my master post until Thursday or maybe Wednesday.
